Hi everyone

I am back on the website again with another reflux baby! any advice or ideas would be much appreciated!
My second son was born on the 3 nov and is also a refluxer, we have started the gaviscon which helps with the spilling but not with the pain and doc phoned hospital registar of paeds and they will not start my son Finn on the losec till a month old, but he screams most of the day and night and its alwful to know he is in pain. Yesterday he screamed for 7 hours straight!
How do I go about getting Finn on Losec earlier, we live in the bay of plenty with only one private paed and long waiting list and no go with the hospital? going back to doc begging with some hope on Monday-which seems a life time away!

Karen
Cameron aged 2 and 2 months( finally over the reflux hell after 2 yrs)
Finn aged 2 weeks ( refluxer)

Hi Karen

Just want to lend my support. My daughter was born on the 29th of October, and is projectile vomiting and silent refluxing too... although the screaming bit hasn't started yet. Our appt with the paed is on Tuesday. Feel like he should be giving us frequent flyer miles, as this will be my fourth reflux baby.

By the way - my twins were weeny, and started losec at 3 weeks old (the day we saw the paed). Don't know what this "month old" stuff you've been told is all about.

Don't most doctors keep a few appts free for emergencies? You could try crying on the phone...? If you are really desperate, jump in the car and drive to Auckland.

Oooh, and I was lent a swing - LOVE it. Wish I'd got one for the other kids.

GOOD LUCK.

HUge huge HUGE HUGS! I am so sorry that you are going through this AGAIN! We are from Tga also and it took for my son to have a reflux related apnea to get him into the system! And now were in things arent alot better 15 months later.

I had a couple suggestions, can you take him to a & e during the screaming times? and see the duty paed who im sure will precribe something? Or would your gp be happier presribing Zantac? (i dont know much about it as we have never used it). Ive personally heard not to fabulous things about the private paed in our area but have never seen him myself. OR would it be possible to contact the paed that your son was under and ask for a urgent referal to him to be done. We did this this time last year and our gp first did a normal referal then a week later a urgent one to the Childrens outpatients clinic, then i followed it up with a phone call & GUESS WHAT appointment a few days later. I really hope that you get into the system soon babe! It must be horrible to be reliving the nightmare! Are you on a restricted diet while bf? is the Gaviscon making any difference?

How is your older son now?

Huge hugs \:\) Hang in there \:\)

I would at least be asking for the zantac...at least that gonna touch the sides of the reflux..esp when they know what it is to start with
Go back to your gp! You know what your on about you have been down this road before.
Sorry to hear we have another 2nd timer here.there are way to many of us around!

Thanks for all your replies and support, I went back to my doc on monday and she was surprised( and a bit fed up) that I had not received an appointment with the hospital and immediately referred me to the private Paed in Tauranga, who contacted me a few hours later with an appointment on wed-you were right veteran( sorry dont know your name) he does emergency appointments for babes up to six weeks! and YAY my son is on Losec!!! the paed totally understood the reflux Finn had and prescribed 10mg for him and said to use the capsules as liquid losec is not effective! Such a relief to finally have Finn on the meds, he was in such pain right from the moment I was in the post natal ward! shame he had to wait two and half weeks for some action!!

I just cant believe that the hospital wanted me to wait a whole month, knowing full well that my older son had really bad reflux and has only come right after 2 years and now has a food aversion, and really difficult to gain weight-so it was very important to me that everyone, my doc, my midwife, my son hospital paed all knew in advance that having another boy would likely be a refluxer! ahhhhhhhhhhhh I recommend the private paed in tauranga, he is good!
shame i did not see him the first time round with my older son!

My older son's hospital paed said it was unlikely that i would see her if my second son was a refluxer, because it worked on how many patient they had at the time, which seems ridiculous! so much for continuing care!

The gaviscon makes my son so constipated that I have actually stopped using it, I don't think it worked that well as he still was in a lot of pain and managed to bring a lot of milk up still! I have not cut out anything in my diet, I did try with my older son and it did not make a difference. It might be a thing to think about if things dont improve a lot!

Thanks for all your support and its great to hear from you all, sorry to hear all your bubs have reflux, it is really hell but it does eventually get easier and they do grow out of it!

Good news Karen - we were put on 15mg of losec on Tuesday for my little girl (she's 5 days older than your little fella) because our paed knows my other kids have all had quite bad reflux. I'd forgotten what a drama it is getting into such a tiny baby. I'm still keeping my fingers cross hers is better in a few months, rather than the year and a half it took with all my others. Fingers crossed too, that your little boy is better loads sooner than Cameron.
