Heya everyone,

As you may well know Madison was diagnosed with Reflux a few weeks ago- I am due to take her back this week. She has been on 1ml of Ranitidine twice a day. This past week she has been physically spilling at nearly every feed, she is still very congested . Yet the crying/screaming/arching of back etc is all gone.
What would you think - does the symptoms normally go like this leaving the spilling? We couldnt offically see her spill last time- it was silent reflux (well not so silent hehehe)
Whats the best path to follow when going back to the doctors this week?

Thanks in advance I really appreciate the advice.

Hi there,
I could be wrong - and you may want to check on the http://www.cryingoverspiltmilk website, but I don't think that any of the medications stop/minimise the vomitting/spilling. They just help to clear/stop any inflammation and reduce the acidity (which causes the pain, arching, screaming etc). So even though she is still/just started spilling, I don't think that necessarily means that her dose should be increased (although it still may need to be - the website has good guidelines about dosage with weight increase).
From what you've written, it sounds like things have settled down a bit, and the zantac is doing its job.
Good luck!

Hi there,

We used Gaviscon Infant to manage the 'spilling' for all 3 of our kids, however you can try an AR formula and see if that helps at all if the spilling is a problem. We needed to continue with it as our kids vomiting, (nearly all of every bottle at every feed) was causing real problems, not least a failure to thrive.

Neither Ranitidine or Losec do anything to help reduce the spilling, they help with the acidity and as a result the pain caused by the refluxing itself.

Best wishes.

Good luck at the Dr, I was just going to second what the others have said regarding the spilling. A thickener may help so it could be worth a go. For us our Dr eventually tried a motility medicine which is designed to moved the contents from the stomach faster so its not sitting around waiting to be spilled up.

Good luck again, I know how frustrating it gets to be constantly covered in milk spills! :-p
