My poor baby has another tummy bug. Woke up happy as Larry, went to visit my SIL, playing happily with her sister and then....blah a big fountain of vomit. She has done several more vomits since and one truely horrible nappy.
She is just miserable and looks up at me with her big blue eyes as if to say 'what is wrong with me?'

This poor kid never gets more than 2 weeks feeling good. I mean she has only just got over her reaction to anti-biotics. She never gets a chance to be happy and play and practise new skills. No wonder the kid isn't walking she spends so much time surviving that she doesn't have any energy left.

I feel very fed up with everything tonight. I spend so much time worrying about her that sometimes I feel like I can't stop. I don't remember ever worrying so much about dd1.

Sorry for the oh woe is me post - just want a happy healthy baby back.

Since she threw up her losec tonight we have decided that we may as well start weaning her off it tonight. So maybe some acid back in her tum will start killing off some of those bugs. The gastro paed did warn up that kids on losec can get more tummy bugs, but this is ridiculous!

Right off to bed as I think it could be a long night.

Mel - how is she today? She has had a bit of a rough run. Ian is a bit sinusy at the mo, and puffy eyed but am hoping it is just teeth as we fly South tomorrow.

Look after yourself. No wonder we can't remember being babies - it sucks...isn't that an amazing self defense mechanism!

No vomiting today - but she is still a bit hot and very sleepy. All she has done is sleep, either on me or in bed.

Not eating , which is a good thing I guess. Here's hoping it won't go on as long as the last one

Haven't been able to get any losec in her since yesterday morning so I guess we are definately weaning her off that! Maybe that will make a difference, who knows.

Thanks for listening to me - i know that you ladies always understand how I am feeling, which helps!

We've just got back from Starship as she was really bad last night and this morning.
Her stamach has been making horrible noises and causing her a lot of pain. You can hear it a mile off.
We are assuming it is the anti-biotics.
We have taken her off these again as she is so distressed.

Nothing major to report after our trip to hospital. She is bad but not bad enough. The didn't seem at all concerned that she was close to dehydration and that she has lost nearly a kilo. They said to bring her back when she got worse...thanks for that.

She has been very upset her this afternoon and vomited up the small amount of food I managed to get in her.
She did just have a small amount of custard so hopefully that will stay down.

I'm sure she will improve tomorrow off the anti-biotics, but then I'm also sure the throat will coem back.

I don't think it is the anti-biotics so much that are making her sick, rather the anti-biotics in her tummy.
Are there other ways of taking them that aren't orally at home? Supositories????

We eneded up puttin her back on losec becasue we just didn't know what was wrong. We figured having her back on would at least rule that out as a cause of her unhappiness.

Kells- hope things go well on Thursday!!!! Let us know as soon as you know anything.

Suomi- I am so sorry that you have recieve the 'shes bad but not bad enough'. I am constantly frustrated with the comments people make about our kids! obviuosly the weightloss etc Is a major & its great that you took her to be seen! It makes me so mad to hear mums with sick kids being fobbed off! I really hope that bubs is feeling better and those nasty antibiotics are getting our her system! Big hugs to you. I will let u guys know as soon as I know anything. Biopsies will take 2-3 weeks BUT the surgeon should be able to tell us how the endoscopy goes there and then. HUGS BABE! Hang in there

Poor thing. I've just had my third antibiotic reaction myself for the year. I vomited so much last night that I tore my oesophagus and I can see acid burns at the back of my mouth which are rather impressive. So thinking about babies going through this much pain makes me want to cry currently. I tend to vomit easily and was admitted with dehydration during one of my pregnancies but the acidity with these antibiotic reactions is something else entirely.

Antibiotics always affected Gem really badly and it got to the point that her paediatrician said she could have injections next time she needed them as it was going to be less mean. The next time she needed them we gave probiotics with them and she hasn't been as bad - partly an age thing also though.

Most sore throats, even strep throats will get better by themselves and antibiotics have been shown in studies to only reduce the course of the illness by one day. The risk of complications with strep throats depends on other risk factors such as living in low decile housing etc. Living in a two year old house would hardly put my children at risk but they have all had antibiotics for strep throat this year as either they were significantly unwell with it, or already had other medical conditions that made me feel they were unlikely to cope well without.

I think you did the right thing putting her back on Losec for now. I hope she is feeling better. Hugs. Take care.

Thanks Roz, that is all really interesting.

Its not the anti-biotics she is reacting to, rather them in her tum so we will be looking at other ways to give her them when she needs them next.
A doctor mentioned a narrower spectrum penicillian AB that is more concentrated, so less irritation to the tum??? I figured there must be an injection so will ask about that too in the future. I just know at the momnet her little tum can't handle them. My gut feeling is she will get better as she gets older, so its just nursing her through until then.

If her throat comes back, and I have a terrible feeling it will, we will just have to see how she goes withtout the ABs. She was miserable and in pain and not eating on them, so she may as well not eat and be slightly happier and a bit hot off them.

Glad we put her back on the losec, will think of weaning again down the track.

Poor you - so hard to be sick yourself when you have kids. How is Gem doing these days?

There is a specific Penicillin that they should use to treat Strep throats. All of my children were okay on this although Gem did have probiotics and is that much older now. My eldest one was okay even though she has had an allergic reaction to Augmentin. I think for ear infections, paediatrician recommended Bactrim (Co-trimoxazole) for Gem when a baby as it is gentler on the tummy.
I would recommend antibiotics only if necessary and give a probiotic with them. I don't know if it was time or the probiotic that helped Gem cope with them but I would not risk without it.
Gem is doing quite well post Nissen-Fundoplication. She is finally back up to around her pre-surgery weight although of course is taller so still on the slim side. She is on 20mg Losec and 20mg Domperidone daily, and 20ml Lactulose twice daily for the remaining reflux and constipation.
