Hi,
Just after some advice. My daughter is 6 weeks old and has been spilling since day 1 which has progressively gotten worse.
I am breastfeeding her and after every feed we get her vomitting, sometimes it looks as if she has bought up her whole feed. Quite often she won't vomit until at least an hour after her feed, which is when the vomit is like a cottage cheese consistency and really stinks.
Twice now, the most recent being yesterday, she has vomitted a huge amount which has been yellow and the same cottage cheese consistency. This went through the nappy we put under her head (for the constant spilling in her cot), her sheet, underblanket and on to the mattress protector. We have elevated her cot at 1 end for the past 3 weeks but this doesn't seem to be making a difference.
Quite often we hear her scream out in her sleep and go in to find that she has been sick, but has nodded off back to sleep.
She hates being held in our arms "like a baby" and seems to be alot happier when we hold her upright.
She constantly gets the hiccups which leads to more vomitting. Quite often she starts squirming when I'm feeding her as if she is in pain.
Last night when she was having her bath she started vomitting which was also coming out her nose.
Is this reflux or is she just a spilly baby? If it's reflux where should we go to from here?
Thanks for any advice

Hi there sounds very simillar to what was happening to my son max (now 5 months)I got sick of it my self at nine weeks after many visits to our docter i needed some sort of answer had his urine and bowel motion tested and they said he was lactose intolerant (had sugar in it)so have that checked then maybe try her on the lactose intolerant formula (s26 do one)I fell he has problems with dairy aswell but not sure but put him on soy formula and was a totally different baby,he still spills a little with wind but not vomiting like he was.So she prob is refluxy and may be lactose intolerant i would have your docter test her bowel motion for this . sorry hope this helps a bit.

Hard to say Cecilia. I'd take notes on her behaviour, see if there are patterns emerging and get her to your GP for a check up.

She may be a 'happy chucker' who spills a lot and gets uncomfortable because of the mechanics of spilling ie. she might get a wind bubble traps which hurts and she spills as the burp comes up or dislike the sensation. My newborn seems to be doing that at the moment, gets very squirmy and uncomfortable but seems OK after a burp and spill other than being a little upset at the taste/feeling. If she is nodding back off to sleep after the spill and isn't continuing to be unhappy then it might just be that. Fingers crossed.

Kids with GORD (who spill and have excess acid production) will usually be extremely unsettled (ie. scream all day & often all night!), often be fussy feeders (scratching/biting/pulling at the nipple/bobbing back and forth with hunger at the breast wanting to feed but being reticent to), dislike being put down, very difficult to get to sleep ever, frequent wakers etc. and its extremely distressing and hard to cope with.

It can take some babies a while to become fully refluxy, so it may be that her symptoms develop further in the next few weeks into the unsettled behaviour, but I'd get her to the doctors anyway about the spilling (though if her weight gain is good then that's a good sign). If they don't develope you might want to try a feed thickener like the one Karicare make which is a maize based product which can be fed on a spoon after BFing which might reduce the amount of spilling.

Also have a look at http://cryingoverspiltmilk.co.nz for good advice.

Good luck, let us know how you get on...
