Help - what is the best way to get gaviscon into a 6 week old. We are having huge trouble using a syringe - she is just spitting it all out and screaming and the bit she does take doesn't seem to be doing anything.

Should there be relief straight away?

Hi Jobo, are you breastfeeding or bottle feeding?
IMO if you are breast feeding I would express a little off and give it off a spoon if you are having trouble. If you are bottle feeding just tip the lot in the bottle! I had instant relief with Olivia but I know in some cases a little time is needed and they say on COSM give it 3 days.
Best of luck!

I am breastfeeding and hadn't even thought of adding it to some expressed milk!! So thank you!

I was so lucky circumstantually, that Olivia was a bottle fed baby with reflux. I can't imagine what it must be like to breast feed a refluxer! Hope you have some better luck, keep us updated

I am a breastfeeding mum, what I did (its such a pain isn't it) was mix it with a little boiled cooled water and tip it into a nipple from a bottle (advent was the ones we used) and he just drunk it before I feed him (while he was hungry he would take the nipple since it was only 10mls or so he drunk it before realising what it was all about) I used an egg cup to mix it in.

Good luck

Definitely give it before a feed as they are more likely to take it when hungry and it is then working whilst you are feeding. Here are the instructions for breastfed babies: http://www.cryingoverspiltmilk.co.nz/MedicalTreatment/GavisconInfant-breastfed.pdf If you are using a syringe if you squirt it down the side of the mouth is is less likely to be spat out. Someone other than yourself might have more luck.
