I have noticed with my daughter that she does really shallow faster breathing then pauses, then does a big deep breathe..and can continue on like this while trying to sleep. This however settles down when she finally mnages to get into a deep sleep(which is not often i might add) ..is this due to the refluxing ?????
I know when she is awake she will do the gasping thing as I am positive this is due to the milk coming back up interferring with the natural breathing cycle. I think if she didn't have the milk coming back up to her throat she would actually sleep and be comfortable!
When at the dr's the other day he commented about the amount of milk in her throat when checking her out...This was 2 hours after a feed! We ar up to 10mg of Losec with today I am going to try 1/2 morning and half at night. The gp I presume will referr us on further if this dose doesn't work.
Have rung a private pead so will be waiting to see when I hear from her to get in and discuss all our issues, but I know it will take some time......I so feel like sitting in A&E and demanding to see a pead as each day that goes by breaks my heart to see her in pain and hear her scream. But feel like that would be a waste of time as they didn't do anything for my son when he was doing the same..we were always sent home to deal with the same old stuff and nothing achieved.
Poor baby has had a rough first 5 1/2 weeks of life! And mum had too!

Hi Lynne
I think that irregular breathing is pretty normal in healthy non-reflux babies. This is why apnoea alarms are set to not alarm until 20 seconds of no breath being taken because it is very normal for them to go at least 10-15 seconds between breaths. I'm presuming her colour is staying okay.
Are you worrying about her breathing? If you are it would be worth investing in a breathing sensor monitor for peace of mind - not as a medical device. There is a newer one out that attaches to the nappy so can be used in a pram, car seat etc. Let me know if you are interested and I will tell you which one it is.
If it is the actual reflux rather than the acid/pain causing her discomfort then you need to do the things to lessen this. Are you giving Gaviscon as well as Losec? This may help and would be worth an experiment. And then as you know there is keeping her upright, no tight nappies etc.
Best wishes

we are doing everything s per reflux bubs need. Gaviscon not impoving things either. Her colour is fine until she screams so much that she goes bright red poor girl!
Surely there would be something out there to actually stop the milk coming up??? How are they surpose to get any sleep if this is making them stay awake. I am sure the Losec is controlling some of it and possibly half her screaming is from wanting to be asleep but she can't due to the choking or constant swallowing.

You could have been describing no.3, she used to breath like that when she was smaller too. It really bothered me but never seemed to bother her. I did check it out with the gp and he said it was very normal in young babies. He even saw her doing it and reckoned there was nothing to be alarmed about, if you are worried about it get on to your gp/paed to be sure. We bought on of the apnoea monitors and the only time it has ever gone off is when daddy has forgotten to turn it off when he gets her up! It does give us a bit more peace of mind though to have it.

Gaviscon Infant is described as a Gastric Reflux Suppressant and is the first port of call medication wise to stop reflux actually occuring. Losec will only reduce the pain by decreasing the amount of acid produced.
I wish I could come down, and give her and you a hug!
