I hate to be the pin that bursts the bubble of all the success stories but I took Olivia to an osteopath. He said that she had no reflux but a twisted heart ligiment which he untangled. Unfortunately Olivia's reflux if anything seems worse! Although I did see on the Osteopath NZ site that if a certain type of osteopathy does not work for you then to try someone else as they do use different techniques and are all experienced in different branches. So I haven't lost faith in the process it just didn't work for us!

Hi we took Toby to an Osteopath for a few months $50 per visit, once a week, we aren't sure if it did anything, but he liked it, he was only 3months old at the time, it certainly didn't do any harm.

We had success with an osteopath, we saw 2 the first one seemed to think she was done so then we saw another. I would suggest getting recommendations for a good osteopath for treating babies for your area if you can so you can get the most for you money, you do have to go multiple times because things need to settle again before they can do more. We had 5 sessions before we had a result at $70 for one osteopath and $50 for the other.

I think it depends on whats causing the reflux as to whether it can help or not.

Hi

We had great success with the osteo. Abbey is still on losec, but seeing the osteo was definitely a turning point for us. Our osteo said that you should only need to see an osteo once - not for repeat appointments. We haven't needed to go back. For us the osteo was the first person, from all the paeds, GPs etc. we saw that asked the right questions about Abbey's birth etc. and really made sense. I think really it depends on the person you see. The guy we saw came highly recommended to us.

Good luck - having a bubs with reflux is so difficult. I was at my wits end with Abbey and her reflux, but she is now a different baby (which I put down to the osteo and losec) and is such a joy.

we had sucess with osteopath. Disn't see results immediately infact the 1st 24 hrs after each session was hell but, eventually enabled us to come off zantac and only remains on gaviscon now. We went to a guy who mainly deals with babies. I think it was about $45 a session but that would also depend on where you live I assume.

Do Osteopath's look at the head? What exactly do they do at the sessions (the physical side of things)?
Do you think a 2 year old would have the patience to sit through it?

I have tried it with all three of my children.

It didn't make any difference, but then our reflux is caused through food intolerances.

It is probably worth a crack (most of us will try another once!). Like others have said you shouldn't need to go back for repeat visits. Certainly I didn't and nobody I know did.

Look out for those money makers!

Osteopaths all have different areas they prefer, and different techniques. They normally stick to cranial work, as its very gentle, but they can release tension in the diaphram too.

A friend has just qualified as an osteopath (after 5 years of hard slog). She would often hold max, and give him a little cranial. His allgeries are worse than Amy's, and so is his reflux (supposedly) but you'd never know. Must ask viv to do more with Amy come to think on it...

Anyway, she said its quite like seeing a doctor - they all have their areas of expertise. Its not a bad thing to go back more than once, but you shouldn't pay full price for repeat visits. Often the effect is cumulative. A little and often has had quite miraculous effects on Max... but then I'm not paying for it so...

A great option if you are in Auckland, is to ring the shcool of Osteopathy, and go to their clinic. A tutor nearly always handles babies and small children, rather than the student... oh and the students are all close to qualifiying if they are working in clinic, and are very closely supervised. I think it only costs about $25.

Otherwise, I'd ring around. Rather than ask what they "can" do, ask what they "prefer" to do, or what their focus is. While you are on they phone, say that money is an issue, and what kind of treatment plan do they normally recommend for babies with reflux... that might be enough of a nudge to get a discount.

Good luck. :-)

Danette, I wonder if we saw the same person, was he in Marton? Apparently he runs clinics in Waikane as well.

Hi Sky06,
No I went to one here in Wanganui. The first I had heard about osteopaths was when someone recommended I go to marton to see the guy you are talking about he was very highly recommended to me, but at the time was totally exausted from no sleep for months and a baby who was in so much pain(reflux) that I didn't have the energy to drive 20 min to marton from here so I rang around wanganui untill I found one who would work on babies. i have often thought I might still make the trip to marton now things are better for us because I have heard the most wonderful sucess stories.
