Please add your own gluten free ideas.

Baking powder also often contains wheat flour. Edmonds make a gluten free baking powder.
Baking - New World generally carry quite a good range of gluten free baking mostly prepackaged stuff such as Freedom Food's. Our local has also started stocking a range of biscuits that are made by New World also. (29/10/2004)
Bin Inn - http://www.bininn.co.nz/glutenfree.htm now have a gluten free biscuit and cake mix and a range of recipes on their website. The ingredients in the Baking Made Easy Biscuit and Cake Mix are Rice flour, ground almonds, potato starch, tapioca starch, flaxseed fibre, guar gum. The Bin Inn price is $9.99 per 1Kg bag. The supplier has confirmed it contains no egg, soy or milk in gluten free cake & biscuit. July 2005
Bread - If you don't have a subsidy for breadmix the book that comes with the Breville breadmaker contains some gluten free recipes which are not too bad - a bit cakie but otherwise quite yummy. Makes good muffins also if you add cheese, herbs etc. Pak'n'save and Woolworths have a gluten free bread that ranges in price from $2.35 to $3.40, depending on the store and the size of the loaf. I find with the Horley's breadmix bread that before freezing it I have to put greaseproof paper between the slices to stop them sticky together, but the pak'n'save loaf doesn't stick. We prefer the Bakels bread mix for making our own. 17/06/2005
Carrot Cake - Woolworths have just started making a gf carrot cake for $3.99. I haven't tried is so can't comment on it'staste. (28/09/2004)
Cereals - Most rice bubbles and cornflakes now have malt added to them (to improve their nutritional value) and so are not gluten free. Healtheries make a gluten free muesli and a hot cereal. Just the Bee's Knees by Hubbards is gluten free and similar to Honey Puffs but is made with rice and millet instead of wheat. I have used it in place of rice bubbles in recipes. Natures Path make a gluten free cornflake. Pronutro is a South African cereal that is maize based. Marked on the box as being wheat free and I can't see anything in the ingredients list that looks like it could contain gluten. Comes in natural and chocolate flavoured (and other flavours also if you can find a South African shop) and looks a bit like a slightly coarser, yellow version of baby rice. Available from most supermarkets. Baby rice is of course a great one for young children. Lowans and Healtheries make rice porridge. (Updated 17/06/2005)
Chips - The Warehouse have Shikar Savoury Potato Grills or ready to eat poppadoms in pringle shaped containers for $2.99. Now this is twice the price I usually pay for potato chips but when gluten free we are often limited to "ready salted". We love the Mango Chutney flavoured potato grills as they are sooooo yum and are labeled as gluten, yeast and egg free. Sorry they do have lactose but maybe some of the other flavours/types might not. I don't mind paying twice the amount if they taste that good. Watch out for the flavourings in other brands as they often contain gluten. <17/06/2005)
Cornflour - Remember to check that your cornflour is maize cornflour and not wheaten.
Cornmeal makes a good alternative to crumbs on chicken.
Crackers - rice crackers are not necessarily gluten free, particularily the flavoured ones. Sakata are usually gluten free. Rice cakes and corn wafers are other alternatives. The new soho rice crackers are nice. (28/02/2005)
Databases - http://www.mfd.co.nz/ and http://www.pams.co.nz/Products/ProductSearch.aspx 28/02/2005
Delphi foods by www.pavillionfoods.co.nz Pavillion Foods Ltd, 10 Garlands Road, Woolston, Christchurch, Ph (03) 381 1886, Fax (03) 381 1455 – reasonably priced factory food outlet. 17/06/2005
Eskimo lollies are gluten free and make a good sweet treat alternative for when others in the house are having, say, a chocolate biscuit.
Gluten free foods - There is a range of gluten free foods available subsidised on script. A special authority number is needed which needs to be applied for by a specialist who verifies that dermatitis hypertiforms or coeliac disease has been diagnosed. http://www.pharmac.govt.nz/Special_authority_Forms/SA0722.pdf 28/02/2005

The Gluten Free Goodies Company - "Makers and suppliers of gluten-free biscuits, baking mixes and baking powder for really light, delicious cakes, biscuits, waffles and bread."
Gravy mix - orgran make a nice gravy mix that comes in a multi serve box. Browns up beautifully and is a reasonable cost for the amount of serves in comparison to other gravy mixes. I get mine from New World.
Huckelberry Farms in Greenlane. They have every manner of allergy friendly food and even have toddler trollies so my three year old can be in charge! July 2006
Icing sugar usually contains wheat flour. Chelsea now make a gluten free icing sugar and so do Pams. July 2006
Instant Puddings - Cottee's are gluten free and although they are a little more expensive than other brands they also make more. Hansells mousse is also gluten free. Pams instant puddings are gluten free. 28/02/2005
Lasagne - Healtheries Simple lasagne is now on a par price wise with the lasagne available on script. 17/06/2005
Liberte gluten free bread, nice and light and pre sliced. July 2006
Meringes - are often on special and may be gluten free - just check the ingredients.
Muffins – gluten free muffins tend to stick to muffin papers so don’t use them. Simply spray your muffin tin well with oil, or even better the silicone (soft) muffin tins available from Avon, supermarkets or Briscoes are wonderful to clean afterwards. 17/06/2005
Poppadoms - These are usually gluten free and make a nice treat to go with a meal or just a snack. We just cook ours in the microwave. See the "Chips" heading above for another range of ready to eat poppadoms. 28/02/2005
Rice paper - This can be bought in the Asian or Ethnic food sections of most supermarkets and after soaking in boiling water you can wrap it around salads or food to make things like salad spring rolls. We mostly use this to wrap around fish before baking in the oven. It keeps the moisture in and is easier than gluten free batter in my experience. 28/02/2005
Sausages usually contain gluten. The butcher at Lincoln in Christchurch has gluten free sausages and saveloys if you request them. They are frozen in 500gm bags so not easily divided. Cost @$5.99 per kilo. Countdown also have gluten free sausages in the signature range. Cost @$7.99 per kilo. They also have Huttons vacuum packed gluten free sausages at about $7 per kilo. Templeton Butcher in Christchurch also has gluten free sausages in a range of delicious flavours. Lamb and mint are our favourite. July 2006
Snack bars - Signature range chocolate coated apricot snack bar is gluten free. Orgran have some fruit bars too. What about the yoghurt covered fruit bites by Uncle Toby? There is another bar which is called Jack Snax I think, and it is a bit like chocolate crackles in a bar shape. I'll try and get the name and update this later. Annies make a fruit leather. 17/06/2005
Sunshine Organic Treats - www.sunshineorganic.co.nz July 2006

NB: YOU NEED TO CHECK THE LABELS EACH TIME YOU BUY ANY OF THESE FOODS AS THEY ARE LIABLE TO CHANGE AND I DON'T TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR SHARING THIS INFORMATION.

RECIPES
The best hint I have been given is that if a normal recipe uses a cup or less of wheat flour it will generally work okay with a gluten free baking mix.
Edmonds adapted recipes - waffles works well with gluten free flour mix but needs lots of extra milk or it goes like cement. Once cooked you wouldn't know the difference. Good for breakfast or a snack for children. Their marble cake and melting moments work well also. In fact I never had any success with melting moments until I made them gluten free.
Healtheries have a lot of recipes that they will post out to you if you request them. You can do this through their website www.healtheries.co.nz or by phoning them. My favourite recipes from their range are the Carob Fruit and Nut loaf (made from rice flour, bananas and yoghurt - good for breakfast, lunch or snack) and the Instant Pudding Biscuits with chocolate chips in them.
Horleys also have a range of recipes that I was given by Crombie-Price. Horleys contact details are PO Box 8645, Symonds Street, Auckland or email at info@horleys.com My favourite recipes so far are their Afghan Biscuits (needs more cocoa in the icing though), Coconut Ice Slice and Durelle's Chocolate Brownies.

Don't bake without xanthan or guar gum.

Since this can be quite a high sugar diet, xylitol is a good low GI sweetener and is purely natural. I buy it via Annies online and it is called dentasweet. It isn't cheap but I normally half the sugar recipe and then use xylitol for the other half to try and ensure I am providing foods that will sustain and avoid blood sugar 'crashes'. It is also good for preventing tooth decay.

Potato starch/flour - I interchange as I only get potato flour here though I was told it is probably potato starch. It seems to work in recipes that call for both.

Thanks Rachel. Good ideas.
I have just got the Simon and Alison Holst Slow-cooker book and thought it was great that they recommended using potato flour for thickening - then read at the front of the book that it thickens quicker I think which is why they recommend it. Nothing to do with being gluten free! I think potato flour and starch are pretty much the same thing aren't they?

A gluten free option for marmite is Mighty Mite. Only problem is that you can only get it from Aussie (from one of the main supermarket chains).
We get family and friends to bring us back some when they go to Aussie (just make sure they put it in their checked luggage and not the carry on luggage - my step mum had about 4 jars taken off her as she departed through Sydney airport).
My husband is coelic and loves the stuff. And I'm giving it on toast to my 8 month old and he seems to love it as well. And even though I don't have to avoid gluten, I prefer it to marmite!

Here is a great list of GF cafes restuarants throughout NZ. I belong to the Celiac Society so this is off there website. Good for GF and DF only though. Click on Eating by region and it will bring it all up scroll along and it will give you a idea of what they serve.

I'd love any recipes for GF & DF biscuits and bread as DD was finally allergy tested recently and we got the results on Friday and she's alergic to dairy, gluten, almonds & hazelnuts and has some issues with soy.

Many thanks

Hi
Check out http://www.glutenawareness.org.nz. The recipes are the same ones as on Crying Over Spilt Milk. You should find some there. I make everything dairy, gluten and soy free (except for oils) currently but don't bother too much with biscuits as I run out of time.
