My 14yo DS is scheduled for surgery before Easter for both his 2nd toes on each foot.
If anyone has had the same op what was your recovery like?
How long did you have your pins before they were removed.
Surgeon says likely 4 weeks.
Any issues further down the track?

Surgeon is sending out all the info in the mail next week.

Why is he being operated on? My second toes are longer than my big toe, it's a family trait, never had issues with it.

I think hammer toe is more than just a length issue, P3G.

It seems to be a family trait on DH's side also.
DD & DS have had longer 2nd toes from birth but also a slight bend at the tip.
With DS growing 3 shoes sizes in 2 yrs and now 5ft 10 at 14yrs his toes have become even longer, to the point that the tip of the toe bends to one side and curls under putting pressure on his other toes.
They give him bother and he's become self conscious of his feet and won't ware barefeet or even jandals in summer other than at home.
Even the Orthopaedic Surgeon said they don't look pretty rolleyes

Ouch, sounds painful. Mine are straight, so no issues.

Ah, Wiki, where would we be without you. I know more now than I did 5 minutes ago. Best of luck with the surgery, I imagine it will be tough for a while!

I'm quite interested in this topic. both of my kids have toes that fold over teh top of the others, in fact at DS' 6 week check, the dr said they may just chop it off if it bothered him (3rd toe I think). They are both unbothered by it at the moment, but my Dad had similar toes, and I know my Aunties suffer with arthritis in their bent toes.

Good luck with your Son's surgery, I hope it all goes well.

I had that surgery when I was 18. My little and next toes in ended up almost curled under my feet, but straightening the second one in apparently corrects the little toe (and it did). Plus I'd started work and heels killed me!

I was 4 weeks on crutches (really tiring with both feet done at same time, heels ache as you can't put your toes down for a while) and I think 6 weeks till the pins were removed (still have one lol and it was 1987!)

I won't lie, it was PAINFUL. Get painkillers, night times were long and I cried and cried. Dad set me up a tent thing as I couldn't stand the blanket weight on my feet... For the first few days I just crawled everywhere as the blood going to them when I stood up meant pain.

Only issues for me have been if you stub those toes, they HURT! (presumably because they don't flex like a normal toe) and for some reason, you always stub those toes! rolleyes

Poor guy, feel for him, although hoping things have changed/improved in the last 24 years since I had it done! fingersx

Crikey Liljay

I hope his recovery is smooth, as he has the 4 days off before Easter & school finishes, and may possibly need the 4 days off when school goes back. He can't wear shoes until the pins are removed at least anyway, and DS says No way is he wearing open toed sandals to school giggle
Surgeon said a month for the pins to be removed.
DS def wants it done now, than waiting till his 7 weeks over Christmas.
Hmmm surgeon didn't say anything about crutches.
DH has had a toe amputated, and coped OK, but in comparison DS surgery is a bit more afraid

You can't put weight on the balls of your feet/toes as it hurts the toes where the pins are. I wore jandals for six weeks, sandals are okay but you have to look at if they squash or cover your toes in any way at first. In saying that though, I had to travel by train from Manurewa to Britomart and then walk up Queen Street to get to work every day - without crutches it would have taken hours rofl

Lets hope that my experience is now out of date (it was many moons ago! lol )

Sorry didn't want to worry you but I remember that pain far more than I can even remember two births! He'll have the term one holidays off then won't he? That should be enough for the worst of it I think... I remember the first two weeks being the worst.
