Ok, so my reasons for wanting low carb options is not weightloss, but I thought that since alot of you here are health conscious you may have some ideas for me? Im looking for low carb meal and snack options. Mainly because I also have IBS and most of the foods my digestive system will let me eat are low in fibre, high in carb and starch which is a killer for getting my diabetes into tighter control I cant eat alot of fats or proteins at a time though,I think this is what ia causing me a major issue on my path to being low carb.. Anyone got ANY tips??

Hi Owly Monster What a dietary combination nightmare, huh? First thing I'd ask is if you have actually had an unequivocal IBS diagnosis. The reason being, very mild celiac disease can present with symptoms similar to IBS. Not that I would wish Celiacs on you!!!! From the IBS side, they say that keeping a food diary helps to identify trigger foods - always assuming that you've not alreaady done so. Then I guess it's down to eliminating the problematical foods rather than a whole food group. In terms of snacks, from a Type 1 more familiar with that side of things, I'd be inclined to look through recommended foods for IBS (and I suppose that would depend on the form your IBS takes - constipation, diarrhea or a combination of both) and then eliminate the ones that don't favour the diabetes control. You could try http://ibs.about.com/od/ibsfood/a/Low-Carb-Recipes-For-IBS.htm - I know it doesn't specifically have a "snack" category but you could look through it andmmodify anything that looks promising. Are you in the District Health Board system for your diabetes? The dietitian should surely be able to give you some pointers. Short of that, just Google. Or see if you can locate a decent rivate nutritionalist or similar. Good luck Annie

Yep, you know me, ive been diabetic for 20 odd years and have a dietition! But they kinda bug me, especially when their suggestions arent realistic Definitly not coeliacs, that was the first thing i was checked for. The IBS was diagnosed by my gastroentorolgist and my issue is born from a lack of pancreas which means I also dont digest foods properly. I have the foods that irritate my system -spinach, high wheat products, high fat foods (sausages is a biggie), apple skin, high acid fruits (tomatoes etc) the foods that I cant touch without bugging the hell out of my diabetes - corn chips is the biggest. I have rather nasty MS at the moment but I can snack like so many recommend. IM trying to eat small amounts regularly, but it usually ends up being toast with refried beans, cheese or peanut butter.. Ill have a look at that website, thanks!

Oh first congrats on your sticky bub there!
Low carb snacks I eat are yoghurt, cold meat like chicken nibbles, ham, cheese, fruit, nuts, celery with cream cheese or peanut butter.
I have restrictions too but different ones to you, it is tricky just trial and error.
One thing that did come to mind when you listed corn, tomatoes, and apple skin is that these are all high in salycylates, also in this list are pineapple, dried fruits, does this sound familiar, my youngest is very sensitive to these along with being gluten intolerant and she used to be dairy free too.

Hey owly, I googled low carb and preganancy sites and there are a few out there. Some seem to be atkins sites, but they might have a combo of foods that work for you. http://www.lowcarbluxury.com/pregnancy.htmlhttp://www.carbsmart.com/dawnsc.htmlI guess anything that comes up with a list of ideas of foods will add to the combo of ideas that you can select from, which is what you need when you are relatively restricted!

salicylates are acid fruits and vegetables and some poeple are highly sensitive to them, we all have a limit, and most poeple can tolerate alot, but other can only tolerate a small amount maybe one serving and they feel unwell. here's a link http://www.allergyclinic.co.nz/guides/30.html

I have the foods that irritate my system -spinach, high wheat products, high fat foods (sausages is a biggie) One thing I discovered when going paleo (currently off the wagon) is that sausages can hardly be called meat (not that you said it was). It took me a couple of weeks to find one that had ONLY meat in it, no additives, no preservatives, no gluten etc. It's pretty crazy. Tomatoes etc are in the "nightshades" food group, IBS peeps traditionally don't tolerate nightshades too well.

hi there owly congrats on your pg. DEX was the same when it came to his IBS, the one food plan that did work was FODMAP, my dad also uses it and he is insuline dependent diabetic, it was also safe for me as well when i was pg with DD.

The one on Lunn ave might have some too, but I know that Ellerslie have awards for their meatness of sausage, lol.
