my oldest DS is going to play hockey this year, apparently, he will be 9 in july so.. in the middle of the season? he has the coordination of a one legged penguin though IYKWIM and i think his desire to play hockey is mainly driven by being able to carry a big stick and hit things with it rather than because he has a particular interest in sport wink

however, my brothers oldest boy started playing soccer when he was 4. my other nephew, who is 3.5 just started BMX racing. as a family though they are FAR more coordinated than us wink

I can't answer as it will only allow one answer.

Oldest DS played rugby first at age 4, did a couple of years of that, a couple of years of soccer, 4 years of hockey, plus a year of Kelly sport and 6 years of cricket, swimming from age 5 to about 11 and now sails year around. Oh and a bit of golf and tennis when younger too.

Middle child tried rugby at ages 4 and 5 but refused to join in. His first team sport was cricket at about 6, then gymnastics, footy (AFL), tennis, hockey, basketball and sailing... all of which he did for a few years. Plus of course, swimming from age 3 to about 8. He doesn't do any sport now, as scouts takes up most weekends (hiking etc) though he does sail occasionally, he's a fair weather sailor.

Youngest child started soccer at 5 and still plays soccer, she has also learnt do sail, done basketball and she did ballet at 3, and swimming of course but not as much or as early as the others. I want to get her started with tennis.

We have always done swimming, which is a favourite. We tried Kelly sports (which is a bit of everything) and he hated that, tears every week. We now do Taekwondo, which seems to be working out so far. Also recently started him running with his dad, he seems to like that too, and will be doing round the bays this year (probably a damn site faster than big lazy mum...)

You never know though, J showed no aptitude for sport really until he got on a hockey field where he really shone, no idea why, I think some of it was just age, suddenly figuring out positioning etc.

Well I put soccer @ 4. She has done swimming lessons since 2, but I didn't consider that as a sport for her, just a thing, lol. SHe does Little Kickers soccer, which is so cool, she loves it, it is game based skills stuff and awesome.

Two kids:

DD1. Started swimming at 1 - complete waste of time and money. We decided no formal sport her first year as we didn't really think she had the energy for it. She did athletics in the 4th term one day a week after school, but that was it. Since turning 6 she now does swimming (currently 3x a week plus each day at school) and Irish dancing. She's keen to do tennis but not sure if it's offered this term. Maybe soccer during winter this year but I think the practice clashes with irish dancing so she'll need to make a decision.

DD2 (almost 5) has just started swimming but we will probably also keep it at that for her first year. I wouldn't be surprised if she picks t-ball next year.

they do tennis at 3?
wow didnt know that.
would like to start my daughter in a sport/activity when she's 4. she has been swimming since she was 6 months old, but we stopped half way thru last year as i didnt like the new teacher. she's now lost most of the skills and doesnt like putting her head under the water.
so could always start her on swimming again, or thinking some type of soccer (not competitive).
i just dont know where to start looking in Palmy.
and wondering if 4 is too young? should i just wait for when she goes to school?

The program's that do multiple sports for a few weeks at a time are a really good way to find out what they enjoy. Don't know who would run it though, maybe the Y?

I don't think Little kickers is operating out of Aklnd yet, but there will be other soccer skills stuff. Lily has gained a lot out of it, and I am pleased we started it when she was 4. There are younger kids in her group (her age group class goes from 3 1/2-5), and no pressure at all. But great for learning rules, you can see clear skills progressions and she thinks she is a soccer super star rofl

Lily is really not into dance either. She did a dance class through daycare and it took weeks before she was really enjoying it at all, and even then it was somewhat begrudginly I suspect. Funny though as she likes to dance for fun and loves music.
