Thanks heaps 3boys, the one she has had previously sounds the same as they one you mention, portable at our Drs surgery. I might mention the lack of speech next time I am in at the Drs (she has a follow up for something else in a couple of weeks).

Just a little bit of my experience.... DD lost a lot of words until she was right down to Mum (had had about 10-15 good ones in her repertoire). She had had no known ear infections and appeared to be able to hear what I was saying to her just fine. However, after reading what Fel said on another thread re being able to hear enough to understand but being blurred enough to affect speech I decided to check her ears. The tympanogram came out completely flat for both ears due to glue ear and infection. We went ahead and had grommets put in and she is a different child - talking a mile a minute, 4 word sentences. Mumma2RnB - the hearing test as a newborn only detects that they can hear, not how well they can hear. Here's a useful thread from last year http://www2.everybody.co.nz/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/2282236/1

Children are incredible at adapting. To them, they don't realise that what they are experiencing isn't normal, so the rest of the body takes over, with the other senses.
it is also more common than you would think to have pain free ear infections.

Oh, and yes to the lip reading - Jenna got very good at that very quickly. Does B look up to watch your mouth when you are reading? Or put his head on your chest? Now I think of it yes he does, I keep telling him to look at the book but he wants to look at me. I didn't think it could be because he couldn't hear. I'm definitely going to the Drs on Tuesday our Dr isn't taking next week off for a holiday.

Lockie does this, today i was trying to get him to say Nana and he was watching my mouth and then making the same movements with his mouth but not making any noise. Hes overdue for his imms so i'll make an appt for him to see Dr beforehand.

How did you get on at the docs today M? Couldn't get in yesterday but doing this afternoon. I don't think there'll be anything wrong, I'm just a paranoid FTM.

I wouldn't worry, BUT I would take him for a hearing check. The earlier you rule things out - or in - the better it is for support, should you need it.
Has he had/does he suffer from ear infections at all? I agree and try not to stress or second guess yourself or compare - easier said than done I know. my #1 was a full on conversation artist by 14months or so, lol I remember visiting a coffee group friend just b4 they had their 1st bdays and she nearly fell out of her chair when he picked something up turned around and clear as a bell said 'wats dat?' lol....yet #2 was a complete silent sally until 2.5yrs old - I'm sure he's still making up for lost time tho omg he literally NEVER shuts up talks in his sleep even, talks about talking then talks about talking about talking arrrrrgh!! part of me wants to just say 'enjoy the peace while it lasts' but I know that's not very helpful my #2 did the same with words at about 1 he used to put his arms up and go 'mumumumumumum' which i was SURE meant me, right? but then it disappeared into silence and grumps. he didn't babby babble or try sounds which is what did concearn plunket and the GP, by the time he had his hearing checked he was about 2yrs and he was fine - but he was an ear infection baby and the audiologist did tell me that often they will have periods where their hearing isn't great and they lose their speech confidence so are often later talkers (was quite reassuring)

Has he had/does he suffer from ear infections at all? Haven't read all the posts sorry. Just wanted to say that getting his hearing checked out is definitely a good idea, but otherwise I wouldn't panic if he has said words previously like Mumma and Dadda. My four year old said almost nothing until he was two and then suddenly you couldn't stop him talking. He wasn't talking until then, but he was definitely taking it all in. Best of luck

My four year old said almost nothing until he was two and then suddenly you couldn't stop him talking. He wasn't talking until then, but he was definitely taking it all in. T does/did this as well. i don't have any major concerns about his hearing, because he can hear people talking behind him/quietly etc (believe me, i've done it over and over again to reassure myself lol), he will nod yes and shake head for no when asked questions, can get things when asked, went through a phase where, if you were reading to him or talking about something... you know 'oh, we are going to the zoo to see the lions!' he would run off and return with a lion or a zoo book, or something like that. he just never SAID anything. in the last month or so he's started saying his brothers names, and mummy and daddy, all pretty clearly. he will attempt lots of other things but... pronounciation and moving his mouth are the biggest things for him.
