DD2 5 1/2 months has been grumpy for 3 days and now has come out in a 'measle' like rash/petichial.. All over, worse on legs and arms. She is also red and swollen under her eyes and has some spots under her mouth (which appeared 1st).

Older siblings are dairy intolerent, but not allergic. All my kids have reflux.

DD2's reflux is the mildest of my 3 kids. She's still exclusively BF. I've been DF since my 3rd trimester with her...

Last week I tried dairy 3 times.. 1st time (cheese and chocolate) she was mildly more refluxy, 2nd time (cheese) she was fine. This rash appeared 72 hours after i had white chocolate. She was GRUMPY, and started screaming 24 hours after i had the dairy. (24 hours was about how long it used to take when DD1 was exposed to dairy too).

I thought it was probably viral.. Due to the 48 hours of grumpiness before hand. She didn't have a high temperature that I noticed, although has a low grade one today. She also seems itchy.

Saw the GP this morning and she said the rash is definitely allergic.

What do others think? Andy one experienced this type of reaction before?

It's possible and I guess if the doc says she thinks it's allergic then you may need to with that until you can think otherwise. One of the things with dairy is that the exposure will build just like you describe - reactions to allergen increasing with exposure.

I was not dairy or egg free while breast feeding DS1 (his allergies were diagnosed through direct exposure at 10 months and 1 year) but looking back he did have dry skin and unexplained welts and rashes which could possibly have been a reaction to increased exposure through the milk whaaat

Did she suggest some anti histamine or creams to calm the itching? Hopefully she gets better soon.

Temp might indicate viral so you never know, it may just be viral.

Thanks 3 boys. I'm holding onto a small glimmer of hope that it may have been viral. But I guess I wont be trying dairy again any time soon! Had better take her to see the paed i guess. (He must rub his hands together when I have another baby, and the insurance company must cringe!!!)

Doc gave us some prednisone... Rash seemed to noticeably start clearing about 3 hours after I gave this.. Does anyone know if steroids help viral rashes? Or does this help support the allergic reaction theory?

On the plus side.. hopefully I might have a happier girl in the morning =)

I am not sure if steriods help for viral rashes, but they do for allergic reactions. So I guess that would support your allergic reaction theory.

I hope your DD is feeling better soon. fingersx
