I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has been dx with Irritable Bowel SYNDROME and who has experienced rectal bleeding NOT associated with haemmoroids or an anal fissure.

My research would indicate that bleeding is NOT associated with IBS but, among other things, IBD.

My daughter was told her bleeding could be one of the IBS symptoms as this was quite common ??????

Anyone please ?

No, it's not normal at all to have bleeding with IBS unless it's haemmoroids or an anal fissure. no

Sounds more like ulcerative colitis to me (DH has it). Bleeding is not normal and not good so she needs to see someone esle. Is she seeing a specialist or was this diagnosis made by a GP? Best she is seen by someone who specialises in IBD/gastro.

How long has it been going on for? Is the bleeding frequent?

My friend had this issue and BOTH her parents died from bowel cancer so she freaked out.
After her colonoscopy they said she was full of inflammation and it could be crones or a number of other issues even an infection but it wasn't cancer.

Her specialist put her on steroids and antibiotics and a few other drugs and things have cleared up significantly.

The big issue was she had been bleeding intermittently from the bowel for 6 months without getting it checked out as she kept hoping it would go away and was freaked it was cancer so when she did tell someone and they urged her to get help right away it really hit home about her family history.

Mmmmmm. I know.....Tell me about it

Dealing with a 20 year old is, I swear, WORSE than dealing with a 2 year old. At least with a 2 year old you can drag them to the Dr kicking and screaming.

Bleeding symptoms have been intermittent for about 9 months. Initially treated as a fissure. Rapid weight loss (approx 7 kgs) over Christmas/New Year. Abdominal pain.

The GP APPARENTLY told her the bleeding could be IBS. I am thinking now this is a convenient lie, told by an obstinante 20 yr old who is in denial that she could be going down the same path as her brother (dx Crohns)

An appointment with a gastroentorolgist scheduled for Wednesday has had to be changed, as she hasn't had the preliminary bloods and fecal sample done yet

Enough to test the patience of Job....

Combined with symptoms of weight loss I would be concerned about the rectal bleeding and glad to hear she is seeing a specialist soon.
IBS is usually a collection os symptoms affecting the bowel and from what I understand (from having working in colorectal surgical area) NOT inflammatory in nature and not likely to cause rectal bleeding.
All rectal bleeding should be investigated regardless of whether she has haemorrhoids or anal fissurs in the past. I hope for her sake its not crohns disease!

grouphug Hope she gets a clear diagnosis and is feeling well soon. I don't envy you having to get her to her appts either so big hugs to you as well.

When Dh's UC was diagnosed, he had bleeding and has lost a lot of weight also. It does sound like UC or Crohns and much more likely given the family history.

The bleeding coupled with the abdo pain and weight loss doesnt sound good as youd already know from DS - I can relate tho to wanting to ignore in the hopes it will go away. I was diagnosed at 20 and my Mum did exactly that after years of mis-diagnosis...she dragged me to a new doctor and I was having a colonoscopy that week. The same week my father had a heartattack and subsequent quad by pass, my grandfather died, my cousin was killed in a car accident and all while dealing with the effects of a new diagnosis, rx side effects and getting meds right - So I can sympathise with having to cope with hit after hit awww

I hope for all your sakes that its not Crohns/UC but if it is at least you will know what your dealing with - Good Luck & let us know how you get on grouphug
