I've been looking on the Net for party ideas and came across this:

Kids are mean even at 8 years old and they are all about money. Since they are all little paris's I would have a Paris Hilton Party. It should be cheap to put together. Just buy everything pink and get some terras and go to the dollar store and buy some small stuffed animals for the dog. Maybe buy some cheap cloths and have a dressd up runway and who ever wins gets a prize. Or buy some arts and crafts and allow them to make their own desinger purse..Im not sure but I hope you can come up with something!!



Another suggestion was a Bratz party with a catwalk show in swimsuits.

Well I am so anti- Paris and the culture of pink it isn't funny,so yeah, none of that happening here.

Then again, I just had a conversation today about what sort of party she might like for her 5th birthday, and what sort of cake, and she wants a mummy cake. As in me. Not eqyptian mummies So can't see her wanting a catwalk party anytime soon.

Ha ha ha I can just see that. Imagine people walking in and seeing decorations made from photos of you, a cake looking like you, pin the nose on Felicis games lol.

I must admit, I like the "make your own purse" idea but I think it's a pool party or tea party for Olivia and her mates this year.

I don't mind the purse making at all. I have an issue with little girls wanting to be Paris Hilton though!

DD is currently writing a list of ideas for her 8th birthday... which is in July.

I'm trying to steer her away from rainbow magic fairies and towards winter wonderland or The Faraway Tree.

Miss 4 has tended to want similar birthdays to her brother so I tend to recycle the ideas lol.

I'm so not doing Rainbow Magic. Plus she'll be turning 8 and I don't think any of her friends will be into those books then. I'll do something she likes of course but if I'm spending a huge amount of time and effort on it then it has to be something I'm on board with.

DD had a movie sleepover party this year for her 8th, with pizza and popcorn and pancakes.

I'm too scared to do a sleepover! Were they up all night? I can imagine everyone awake till 3 in the morning if we had one.

No, the movie stopped at about 11 and by 12 I got stern with them and they wre asleep quite quickly.

My daughter and I were looking at dolls just yesterday. She pointed out Brats dolls and I proceeded to tell her that they weren't very nice and how they didn't dress very nice and how being a brat wasn't a nice thing. "Here honey, look at this Moxi Girl, she looks much nicer"

you would be very surprised Cadium, and american kids would be even more exposed to it than here. I would say less would know of her now, but when she had her show here, 8 yr olds watched it for sure.

I was thinking that my 8 yo wouldn't have the faintest idea who Paris Hilton was - I mean I know he's not a girl, but the same principle would apply if I had a girl.

And lets all dress them up with full-slap make up and put them into kiddies beauty pageants while we're at it - that's what it smells of to me.

Misty - I am pretty sure that my Lily wouldn't know at 8 either, but she also won't know who the Kardashians are, or any of the reality 'fame for fame sake/boobs and biarchiness' people, (I do not watch them as they are all out of the same bag). I taught/teach kids that watch those sorts of shows and think that growing up to be paris or whoever the kardashians are, is actually a worthy goal, and would LOVE a party along those lines.

That quote was from an American website and the other party suggestions were things along the same lines. There was one that was a treasure hunt in a mall where you had to seek out lipsticks and purses and buy things in certain shops too.

DD is 7.5 and she would have no idea who any celebrity was. She's heard of Hannah Montana because her friend likes her, but she wouldn't be able to pick her out of a line up. She's not into real life tv yet, and still watches Playschool and all of the preschool shows with her brother (4).

For her 8th birthday this year her ideas are Rainbow, Winter, Butterflies, Explorer, Purple, or "Bouncy". Thankfully no celeb's in sight just yet!

I was just pondering how NOT like this DD is. She knows Hannah Montana, and thinks she is not that cool, she knows lots of bands and music. But I remember when DS17 was this age, and how he was quite innocent, not quite into the Wiggles but not far off, and how he went to a friends place who had older brothers and introduced him to Linkin Park. I realised, I've just swapped places, amazing what older siblings do.

After reading this thread I was interested to know what my 8 year old would know about Paris Hilton etc, (she is still into Rainbow magic books, fairies and all things innocent), but I wondered if that was my perception of her rather than the reality.

So, I said, 'Do you know who Paris Hilton is?' To which she replied... 'Of course I do Mummy, its a hotel in France" Top Answer! Yeahhh, I know Im doing something right, and that was one of the reasons that we moved to this amazing country! I hope it lasts for many more years!

My kids would have no idea about Paris Hilton. DS is only 6 and even though he's never seen the movies he loves super heros - spider man, superman, batman and therefore so does DD1 DD2 is starting to like the Wiggles .

DS sometimes wants to watch more 'grown up' movies (cartoon movies with a PG rating) but I noticed yesterday he was quite happy with the Wiggles movie too.

I'd like to protect their innocence as long as they can. They have no idea about current music trends as I rarely listen to the radio and we mainly play Christian rock music. So they're pretty up with that

HC, I imagine that having older siblings just opens things up earlier, not much you can do there in sme ways. Though Hannah Montana I don't put in the same bucket as Paris and co.

Lily likes a lot of modern music, at the moment her faves are Brooke Fraser and Avalanche City songs, ones off the radio that appeal. We don't overly censor music, but then our tastes are relatively conservative anyway I guess.

It must be a first child thing. She listens to our music so she knows of Brooke Fraser, Jack Johnson etc. but because we don't have any tween celeb stuff on she doesn't get exposed to it I guess. I'm sure it'll be different for DS.

She's still quite young in a lot of ways The only real person show she likes is Backyard Science. Both of my kids are obsessed with that show!

See my DD1 is obsessed with Taylor Swift, knows all about her, is playing guitar to be like her, but doesn't know any other "celebs" really - other than the All Blacks (thanks to her rugby nut dad) all pretty harmless. She's not a girly girl though, so would not be interested at all in a pink princessy party - nor catwalk modelling etc - not that I would ever allow that anyway. One of her friends would love that sort of thing though

I reckon Taylor Swift is a great singer for a young girl to like. When DD starts showing an interest in that direction we were planning on putting Taylor Swift in her way!

I don't know Pudding, my boys aren't really into the tween celeb stuff so M would not have a clue who Paris Hilton is. Maybe it's a boy thing? Music on the other hand, she knows masses of different eras and genres, but that is also us, I listen to new hip hop, pop and rock as well as old stuff, so she has a very varied mix of musical taste.
I find the music thing quite interesting, because I'm finding with the creation of iTunes and youtube, kids aren't restricted to what is fed them by the radio stations, so their tastes are much more eclectic and not restricted by what is popular. J is very into Pink Floyd at the moment, along with Bliss n Eso etc.

definately DS 8yrs has just realised there are celebritys - thankfully barack obama is right up there on his list haha (he's picked up on quite a few dinner conversations and news articles so apparently he's the most awesomest-lol thank u grandma) but closely followed by stan walker, Taio cruz, katy perry, and now Reece from X factor oh and a myriad of soccer stars (aspires to be an all white). at 5yrs he was into fire engines and make believe etc - but my 5yr old hasn't played with fire engines, sung wiggles songs or watched thomas for atleast 2yrs bcos he's all into justin bieber and stan walker every song ends in 'baby baby, or tick tock like dyyyynamite' (I feel really bad for the other mums of 5yr olds in his class as i remember thinking those kids were ruining my sweet innocent child with #1 haha -luckily both of his besties are younger siblings too so they all march to the same drum somewhat.
I dont really know where DS picks it up from - i think a great deal of it is talk around the school yard...then when he is listening to the radio he hears a song or a name he knows and it starts to click. we dont really watch much tv, my weak spot is xfactor tho lol - which he also loves. he apparently watches a show on in the mornings called 'iron chef' and talks about it non-stop to anyone that'll listen (yes bad mum i've bn sleeping in over the holidays lol) quite funny for a child that dislikes eating to become captivated in a food show - i figure for him it can only be a good thing - tonight he chopped mint sauce up in to grated cheese bcos he saw it on iron chef - but hey he ate it lol
