Hi
I'm moving to Christchurch in Feb and wondered if anyone could recommend a good Ob/Gyn, preferably someone who's sympathetic to recurrent pregnancy loss and is proactive in treating Factor 5 leiden blood clotting deficiency?

I had such shocking medical treatment in Dunedin after my last miscarriage I vowed I wouldn't have any more kids if we stayed here. I'm still not sure if I'm strong enough to risk trying again, but would really love to get a second opinion from someone else before making a final decision. The doc I saw here refused to acknowledge my blood clotting problems, the fact it was my 3rd loss, or offer any strategies for another pregnancy. She would only consider it as a spontaneous single miscarriage because I'd had my daughter the previous pregnancy and wouldn't consider the previous 2 miscarriages at all. She didn't even see much need in taking aspirin (!) or needing an Ob, any old midwife would do. The only advice I got was to take no more than one month off and get onto it because of my age (42) peeved As if.

6 months on and I'm only just starting to consider the possibility of ttc, but there is no way I even start that journey unless I have a supportive doctor/midwife/Ob behind me 100%. Because of the age thing if I do go again, it will be my last shot and I want/need all the help I can get to make it work.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I'm not sure if you have to PM me or posting ok?

Thanks heaps
x

Hi Tessiebear - sorry have no idea or recommendations for chch. You might want to post in the general miscarriage forum to reach a bigger group of people? Good on you for proactively seeking the support you need

Hi, sorry Tessiebear - I did do some googling because I cannot for the life of me remember the name of the woman who was really good with my Factor V Leiden. It was a woman obstetrician at CHCH Women's.

Basically I would suggest that if you are after treatment for during pregnancy, not for conception, that you wait until you are pregnant and then your midwife will refer you to the high risk team at Christchurch Women's where you will get a physician (who is the one in the know about the Factor V Leiden) and an obstetrician. Based on personal experience I would suggest that you start on 5mg/day of folic acid when TTC, and take lowdose aspirin once pregnancy is confirmed. This is the advice that I received. I was then started on heparin daily once I reached around 9 weeks (Factor V generally causes later losses and is thought to have been the cause of my loss of M - I was not on any kind of treatment for her).

Otherwise if you want to go privately I hear that Peter Benny is good. I have also used Michael East for my endo issues, not sure if he still does obstetrics or is only gyn now.

Good luck!

Hi There
I had Colin Conaghan for my first pregnancy and also during our recent miscarriage - He was fantastic through both and would highly recommend. He s a private one so you do have to pay though. This was my first miscarriage so don't know anything about what you need specially but it may be worth talking to him.
He works at St Georges. Let me know if you need any further info.

Peter Benny moved to Australia a while ago, but HiJ the lady ob you may be referring to Joy Dickson who apparently is the best. Another good one works out of the Oxford Clinic, will try and find out the name.
