Hi, I used to hang out here ages ago, but then had two more kids and got too busy!! My oldest is nine, and is now only allergic to milk and nuts (he's grown out of a VERY long list though)

18 months ago he had a cooked milk challenge, which he failed because he cleared his throat four times, and then they listened to his chest and said he was wheezing, so administered adrenaline. No outward syptoms except for the clearing of his throat.

A couple of months ago, I started trying to introduce cooked milk, starting at tiny quantities per serve (1/3 of a ml !). He's now up to 4 ml per serve. But he says he doesn't like anything that I bake - he doesn't know that it contains milk as I haven't told him - so would you consider his dislike to be a reaction? He is otherwise fine.

I'm guessing his body can pick up the small quantity of milk, which is why he doesn't like it. Would you continue trying to give him cooked milk in the hopes he'll eventually tolerate it, or should I stop?

Thanks for all ideas, Id love to hear from everybody, whether you agree with what I'm trying to do, or you are greatly opposed to it - all viewpoints welcome smile

Did he used to eat your baking fine before you started adding the milk?

Yes, I'm making the same things that I have previously made dairy-free, just adding milk to them instead of water. Things like chocolate cupcakes which he'd eat as many as he was allowed to when they were dairy free, but now he says he doesn't like them when its got 4 ml of milk in each one.

I'd love to desensitise him to milk - he's got school camp coming up in one years time, and scout jamboree in two years - it would be so much less stressful not having to worry about what he's eating!!!

But I don't what to make him worse either, so not sure what is the best thing to do.

Hmmm I would say it is a reaction then. I know that he is alot older than my DS was but, when my DS was a baby up till 4yrs before we knew he had allergies, he absolutely refused to eat practically any food except plain steamed rice & a few select other bland foods. So I think that kids automatically won't eat things that make them feel slightly off IYKWIM

I would keep him off it for a while longer if it were me.

Yay for him outgrowing a long list of other allergies tho!

Hmm, I dont know- do you think it might just because it tastes different? As if he has never really tasted anything with milk then he probably would notice the difference right away as it would be a totally new taste for him. Although with such tiny amounts of milk being added then perhaps not.

Its hard to know isnt it. My boy is a lot younger than yours, but if it were me I would probably continue if there were no other symptoms. Good luck fingersx

DS3 has been eating vogals GF since intro'ing cooked milk and egg into his diet but recently I couldn't get any vogals GF so had to use another brand which had no eggs or milk in it and he says he prefers it. He hates the crusts of the Vogals (perhaps it has an egg wash or something like that). So I have wondered like you if it's a reaction. He's certainly happier on the other brand.

On the other hand my older boy simply doesn't like the taste of some of the foods he was allergic to eg he doesn't really like cheese or straight egg but happily eats baking... so for him it's a matter of getting use to the taste.

It's a tricky on but I'm inclined to say persist until you see clearer symptoms of reaction...
