I just wanted to say thanks to people here, I have been reading recipes and information some have posted for a few months now and has been a big help to me learning to cope.

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes back in early april, although to start with they thought it might be late onset type 1 because of how quickly symptoms appeared and how I didn't respond to early meds. My BG was 26 when diagnosed and even with meds and a careful diet I struggled to ever get my levels below 14, they were saying I was going to have to go on insulin and there was no other option. I have a very strong family history of diabetes too so wasn't too surprising.

I was on the depo injection and had been for nearly 2 years when diagnosed and had been getting some awful side affects from it but when I asked the doctor she said no way could the injection affect diabetes but after a lot of research I decided to go off the injection. I have been off it for over 3 months now and my BG levels are between 6 and 9 now, mostly in the 6's and 7's and have steadily improved over the last few weeks with no changes in medication or diet.

I am just wondering if anyone has had any experience with anything like this or know if having the depo injection could cause diabetes? I have really struggled with this one.

Thanks

Hi and welcome to the Club no one joins voluntarily.

Great to see that your figures have dropped significally after going off the injection - the GP says no way but the result shows different, i will leave the conclusion up to you.

I suggest you cut pasta, rice, potato, white bread from your diet immediately to see if you can maintain in the 6's rather than 7's or you could end up on Metformin.

Hi MO7,

Welcome and so pleased that you found this forum helpful, please don't be a stranger and join in, we are a very friendly lot and lots of streetwise sense here.

As for the depro injection I am past that stage in needing anything like that so not much help but have you googled side effects of depro? Sadly some GP's are not very Diabetic savvy, as we are all different so what suits one may not suit another.

Do you know what your HbA1c was on diagnosis? The longer your BGL's stay elevated the more damage you are doing to your body. Good on you for being proactive as far as your health is concerned and well done on lowering your levels.
Keep it up.
Please come back and join in.
Good luck

Thanks, and sorry no I don't know what my HbA1c was, they did tell me and said it was rather high but I was so confused about so much that I can't remember a lot of it, lol.

And yes I have cut out pasta, rice, potato, white bread and most high carb foods as soon as I was diagnosed but didn't make any real difference at all, even though my mum swears by a low carb diet and so does my aunt and others I know. I have only just been able to add a small amount of wholegrain bread back in recently without my levels rising. The dietician said so long as the sugar level of a food is under 15g per 100g it will be fine for me but I find I am in trouble if the sugar is over about 3 - 3.5g per 100g. Sometimes it is hard to know what to eat at all!

One advantage I have is I have 2 big dogs here begging me for a walk every day, lol, and it is good to have the energy to be able to keep up with them and enjoy a walk again after months of no energy at all!
