Hi guys

HELP!

Ok I have a 13 week old girl so the GP has said reflux and the pead has said maybe milk protien allergy

Symptoms are mainly during feeding, (she is now formula fed) fussing at the bottle, turning head away to side quite far, gagging, coughing, pushing the bottle out, screaming, making pain type noises, when not feeding sshe is generally happy, is happy laying flat and doesnt seem distresssed when she spills. She sometimes rubs her eyes but has no excema that I have noticed, she farts alot and sometimes brings her feet up and wriggles in bed

She generally sleeps well and is happy when up problems just mainly with feeding

Today has been terrible, ive managed to get 300ml into her in 12 hourss and its taken rocking, shussing, feeding in her sleep to get that little into her, when shes awake she will take 40ml thats it, shes not sick either.

My eldest boy had reflux

Treatment so far she has been put on hyperalergenic formula for infants from the supermarket which is for children at RISK of developing an allergy not for children with a milk protien allergy shes been on this for a week. Ive sent my husband to get a tin opf pepti junior to try and I started the losec from the Dr yesterday so hoping one or the other will help...hass anyone else had the same problem,? what do you think it is one or the other? gp recons reflux but pead recons allergy ass she is happy when spills and lying down, Im stuck, Im not getting any help from the pead, he wants to try her on soy next but I srefuse since she is under 6 months s of age HELP!

Hi

I would go with guessing it is cow's milk allergy but you might as well keep up the Losec now it has been started until you get symptoms sorted. If a hypoallergenic formula helps, you can then try weaning off it.

I think you are right to try a change in formulas and I agree that soy is generally not used as a sole source of nutrition. Can you get a second opinion or do you think they will support Pepti Junior if you prove it helps?

Thanks Roz, I think I will get a second opinion or go to my gp, Im sure she would be supportive of the pepti junior, the pead wouldnt be, I spoke to him yestserday and he was unfriendly, unhelpful and told me to keep up with the losec, didnt mention pepti junior and ring him in a few days, so think I will go to the gp or try another pead

It coul be one caused by the other.

My DS is cows milk protein intolerant and for the first 5 months of his life until he went on neocate (prescription hypoallergenic formula) he had terrible reflux, at one point he was having losec 3 times a day. Once we got him on neocate, his reflux all but disappeared and only happened when we tried new textures of foods. So I think it's possibly both!

My strong advice is to see another paed. I saw one paed when DS was 2 months and he basically said nothing wrong with him, just normal developmental stuff, you're just being a first time Mum. I wasn't happy with that as I knew this wasn't normal. So in another month or so I took him to a different paed who I had reccomended by my GP and had also heard he was the guru for this sort of thing. And he helped us beyond measure, put DS on neocate and we haven't looked back. So get a second opinion. GP's can be helpful but at the end of the day they don't have the specialist knowledge that is needed sometimes. My GP pretty much said in the end I'm not sure, but here's someone who can help.

Where are you located? I can strongly reccomend my paed if you are in Auckland but there are very good ones in other parts of the country too

Hi,
I would be very interested to know if you have found out if there was a dairy allergy or just the reflux or both? Our 11 week old son has these EXACT symptoms, except he also has excema rash on his face and arms which worsened with the hypoallergenic formula and was even worse still on soy. We have had him on losec since he was about 8 weeks and some symptoms had improved (eg we could actually feed him, as we got to stage where he would scream after one suck on bottle) but he still wasn't feeding well. I was adimant he had a dairy / soy intollerance as well but we have just had his losec increased a week ago and nearly ALL of his symptoms have improved even the excema and painful gas cramps, (still very spilly though) so now im not so sure?
