Apple has determined that, in very rare cases, the battery in the iPod nano (1st generation) may overheat and pose a safety risk. Affected iPod nanos were sold between September 2005 and December 2006.

This issue has been traced to a single battery supplier that produced batteries with a manufacturing defect. While the possibility of an incident is rare, the likelihood increases as the battery ages.

Apple recommends that you stop using your iPod nano (1st gen) and follow the process noted below to order a replacement unit, free of charge.

Note: This battery issue is specific to the iPod nano (1st gen) and does not affect any other iPod.

So I am assuming they will send me out refurbished 1st generation one, not a new one. Still, better than a burnt hole in my pocket.

I'm guessing that will be the case. I've got a 4GB nano so they better send a 4 and not a 2!!

How do you know what generation it is? We have one that I think fits that criteria. And do you still need the receipt?

Ladies, who did you contact? Did you use one of the authorised service repairers? I'm confused, but hugely excited, as mine may qualify and as it currently doesn't work that would be a huge bonus!

1/2 way down the page it says "click here to begin" and you fill in the serial number of our ipod and then it will tell you if your ipod is a recall one.

Hmmm just read in an earlier post that there isn't an NZ option to choose from - so I have no clue where you would go!

Just read this on the apple page

"If you need assistance with placing an order, please visit an Apple Retail Store and bring your iPod nano with you for serial number validation"

I'm assuming this applies to NZ as it isn't on their list - which is odd as it was back in November 11

You can take it in to any Apple service agent or call them and they can tell you.
