Thx. But where I bought it (one organic shop), they told me they dont do recommendations for babies. Then I really have no idea.

We got the same form the health shop. Is there a specialised person you can take your kids to to find out about slippery elm and such things? It's not homeopathic but something similar? Roz just advised me to think about it mathmaticaly and divide the dose for an adult of 70kg for your child depending on the doseage on the pack. That is what I am going to do.

The information to think about it mathematically isn't my recommendation but something I found. To be safer you are best to contact a naturopath - e.g. www.healthpost.co.nz etc. If you google slippery elm in NZ you will find several places who sell the powder and they usually have someone who can advise.

We use it twice a day, I mix 1/4 of a teaspoon with hot water, let it thicken & then add a bit of formula to dilute the flavour (it tastes good, a bit like hazelnuts :)). So I give dd her losec, with some pear, wait half an hour, give her the slippery elm & then breakfast. I found it took about 3 weeks to really see a difference (which is how long the losec took as well). But dd chomps it down, so I figure it must be helping. You can give it 3 times a day, so if dd is really bad in the night I will give her another dose. It has definitely helped with her bowels, she is regular again She is 6.5 months and 8kg, a good friend of ours is a naturopath, so she gave us the dosage, she actually recommend 1/2 a teaspoon but I prefer to start off with a smaller dose & increase it if needed.

My GP agrees the thing to do would be to split an adult doseage( adult 70 kg) but recommends seeing a natro path as this it the medical way to think about these things and alternative medicine has an often different way of seeing these things. From what I know of homeopathy then I guess he could be right.

Thank you all of you for your help. I have started my little girl with 1/4 tsp since four days. Now, wait and see if it helps.

We started Arlo on it for a couple of days. 2 hours after his night Ranitidine just before bed mixed into some custard.3 days later and he has the worst bum and poop he's had in ages. Going lots too. Thinking it is a co-incidence but took him off anyway and think he may just be ill. Will try again but didn't seem to make any difference to his sleeping and or moods. Doing both teh Ranitidine and Omniprezole was hugely noticibaly better. Now going Dairy free for the month while we wait out this poo thing. Trying everything.

You just read my mind Roz! When I was feeding my little girl SEP this afternoon I thought I needed to come back and give some feedback on how she is. Then since I posted the first message , she is on 1/4-1/2tsp a day. I still do it mostly because she likes it. Shes much better, less vomiting and spilling, but the BIG question is: Is she better because of the SEP or because Im managing her reflux/solids interaction better? Who knows? Shes better, and thats the most important. Then I think I will continue a bit longer.

Finally I stopped it two days just to see... and her poos were hard rock solid! Then at least, the SEP is good for the bowel motion!! Were back to it ...

HI there Great to read about slippery elm as we have been giving it for about 2 months now as well as trialling failsafe elimination diet - breastfeeding mum and baby. But when he got an ear infection he refused his supplements and most food - probiotics and slippery elm - and he has also got really bad with his reflux and skin -ive just got im back on probiotic (about 2 weeks later) but not the slippery elm yet, I was blaming foods but maybe i will just get him back on this first and see how we go. But really I was wondering if anyone knew or had noticed if it helps with ezcema as well?
we were advised to give 1/4t twice day intially and then increased to 3 x a day and with the combination of that and probiotics saw a big improvement in bowel movements, wind and his relux had improved too. Baby was 8 months when started.

Hi Amandaandmike where there is reflux AND eczema then it's usually foods ie allergic reaction. Failsafe diet is not often recommended for children with allergies as it is quite restrictive food wise and often one of the big eight allergies is to blame for eczema (dairy, egg, soy, wheat, shellfish, fish, peanut and nuts). However children with allergies will often have some food intolerances as well so if it's working then you should keep going with it but think about try adding back in foods to widen yours and his diet (and test reaction). You could also consider seeing a dietitian who understands the failsafe diet to help you out and you could also consider allergy testing if you haven't already.
With regard to eczema and probiotics some mums see an improvement with probiotics. Most commonly used amongst allergy mums is eczema shield from inner health. This is the strain of probiotics that was specifically trialed in babies/children with a predisposition to developing atopic disease. Certainly my son who was a participant in the study does not have eczema as opposed to the other two but results vary. Most of the allergy mums on the allergy forum use probiotics of some sort though.

Thanks 3boys- we have had skin prick tests and it only showed mild to egg. I have eliminated all of those foods and still have problems and yes very keen to be eating more for both our nutrition. Had been speaking to a paed in auckland who has helped more than the ones down here - timaru - all help professionals down here dont believe food could impact on either. His ezcema flared immediately with a little banana, after taking salmon oil tables - recommended by a naturopath his ezcema and relfux deteriorated a lot - also think avocado an issue - I want to get back to more foods but is hard to know whats causing what and paed says to wait till hes "settled" hehe when will that be.... but we did see a big improvement adn now just dont know whats causing this down hill -he started eating chickpeas, antibitoics not having probi and slippery elm..... ahh it always happens at once but will truc on and keep smiling Thanks though and ill have a look at allergy forum

Antibiotics can aggravate reflux - to the point our GP stopped treating Gem's ear infections if at all possible. His eczema possibly just flared up due to being unwell. There is some evidence that indicates that probiotics do help eczema - http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/719654_9 for example - and they do help with digestive health also. I don't know of any effect of slippery elm on eczema although it helps with any inflammation - but I think generally the inflammation it comes into contact with.

HI we finished the antibiotics 2 weeks ago and the reflux is getting worse now - would this be from them. I expected a quicker impact from them? I try to avoid antibiotics were possible but is hard to know when GPs say they need them if they really do - speacilst is writing to GP though thanks
