A lot of kids at DS1's school here in Aussie ride their scooters to school. They put them in the bike cage which is locked during the school day.

I would think they would be treated in the same way bikes are while at school and I think a blanket ban of riding scooters and bikes on the school grounds could perhaps stop other kids taking your son's scooter?

Most schools I have known about have a bikes for seniors only thing, and wouldn't have scooters - nor allow kids on them in the playground.

There should be a policy or at least a position the school has on the whole nbike/scooter thing and I would clarify that before i took issue with anything (other than the punch).

The amount of time sucked up by fights over kids toys is so frustrating, I take the hard line rule that if they bring it to school, i will not be using any class time to follow up on any issues it causes (again, if something physical broke out that would be different, but would be purely about the physcial thing).

Thanks for the advice guys!

I have convinced him to leave the scooter at home for now and I will bring it on a Friday afternoon for him to ride after school. There are heaps of scooters all lined up unchained but you are right, if its precious it shouldn't be left out all day.

As for my friend. Arg she is a bit lax with discipline and cant really see her son is a little toad! Will leave it for now but jeez if it happens again I wont bother talking to my friend that's for sure! Will go straight to a teacher or tell him off myself.

Loads of kids scooter or bike to our school. The key difference I am spotting to your schools is that it is school policy that they re not to be riden on school grounds. Ever. As soon as you get to the school gates, you get off and walk it, whether it's scooter, bike, heelies, skateboard. Occasionally a really good one is stolen, sadly, but that's it. It also makes the whole school grounds a lot safer for those who are walking!

really sad that the school is like that really.

i was thinking about it lastnight, and i actually think that no i think he should be able to take it to school...a scooter should be treated the same as a bike-and be able to be left in the bike racks etc etc. I dont think it is the teachers JOB to police who gets on what afterschool...BUT i think the message should be out there loud and clear...and a ban on rideing any of them during school time.
I dont know what is different about our school....there is no policy about not rideing on grounds (except during school time) or only senior students or anything like that...we have HEAPS of scooter riders -prob more than bikes even..and they leave them there, at the bike racks, not even the bikes are locked....yet i've never seen nor heard of annnny issues.
DS sometimes gives his friends a ride...but that's always a mutual 'have a turn' thing not a take it thing.
