Hi,
I have a four and half yr old girl, she toilet trained really easily at 2 and 1/4, and has had very few accidents since.
I just wondered at what age children stop wearing nappies at night? And how do you go about training for this?
I can't remember ever wearing nappies at night when i was at school, so think it must be about time to start seeing she will be at school in 6mths, but she is still very very wet at night. The Huggies Junior naps amazingly still contain it all, and she has never had a dry night yet. She is a real sleeper, also. Sleeps solidly from 7pm till 7am.
I;ve been doing sticker charts for her daytime nap also, as she only has a couple of days now where she sleeps for 2 hrs after lunch, and has started to wake up from those with a dry pullup. We'll have to break the daytime nap before school too, but I'm not sure how to do that one either...hoping she will grow out of it?
Do you just wait till they start getting dry naps at night, or is there some secret trick to it????
TIA.

My 7yo is still wet at night, and I think its just that he isn't ready to hold it all night. Dd at 4yo has had the odd dry night, but not so many that I'd risk taking the nappy off yet. I have told her that if she is dry three nights in a row, she can wear knickers to bed - which she wants to do - but if you ain't ready, you just ain't ready...

We never waited for a dry nappy, he never had one - we just tried him without a nappy it and it worked.... give it a go... it might not work (brolly sheet recommended), but then again it might. We do limit fluid intake from dinner time and ensure he goes wees before bed - and early on we would wake him before we went to bed to do a wee.... he would virtually stay asleep when we did this.

DD2 has decided that 'I big girl, I not wear nappies', at 3y 1m. We had three wonderful days, now we are getting a fair bit of wet nights, I am hoping things inprove soon!
DD1 decided one day that she was too old for nappies, having never had a dry night, and was dry from then on - I think she only ever wet the bed about 3 times from then.
So in summary, they are very variable, all you can do is suck it and see, while being aware of the consequneces for them, eg loss of confidence if she ends up back in nappies, or my situation of wanting nappies back but she's not having a bar of it, etc.

My 5 yr old just said one night he didn't want to wear a nappy anymore and that was pretty much it. He wets the odd night if he is dog tired but the brolly sheet works for that

I reckon if she's dry during her naps, she could be ready to try no nappies at night. Don't go by how wet her morning nappy is now, she could just be going in it because it's there. My nearly 4yo had soppy full nappies every morning but one night I forgot to put a nappy on her and she stayed dry, and has ever since with the odd exception. She'd just been weeing in the nappy because that's what it was there for. Just give it a go, what's the worst that can happen?

It depends on whether or not she can wake if she needs to wee or not. The only way you'll know is if you do give it a shot. If she is soaked in the morning then you'll know she is not ready.
WE discovered DS was weeing in his nappy first thing. One night he didn't have a nappy on and was dry in the morning so we never looked back.
But some children sleep so soundly that they aren't aware of their bodies needs. From what I understand no amount of effort, rewards and incentives will help as their brain and body have to catch up with each other.
So if you DD sleeps like the dead and never wakes for anything she might not quite be ready.

we just went cold turkey when our twins were 4yo. It was summer, I was at home and I figured I could cope with washing. So, we told them that they would be wearing undies one night....we take them to the toilet before we go to bed (about 10.30pm) and they do it half asleep...we still have few accidents a few times a week..but we have plastic sheets, so just wash the bedding....we now have maybe an accident a week, if not less...
It worked for us, so give it a go, you can always go back to nappies...

DH forgot to put a nappy on DS1 earlier this week and he woke up dry - he's never had a dry night nappy. Figured he was waking up, peeing and then getting out of bed so haven't put one on him since. Only had one wet bed in the morning after drinking quite a bit the night before

well I was going to...then a very big earthqauke hit, and we wnt back to square one....has been on and off all year unfortunately, but given only a minor 4 day setback of wetting the bed with the latest 23rd quake, i think we might be nearly there....(fingers crossed and touching wood!)

Mr three-and-a-third stopped wearing his night nappy last week.
During our Xmas holiday I slept in the same room as him and noticed that he was peeing at around 6am, just before he got up (I knew it because he makes a certain noise when he pees).
What that told me is that he could go all night without peeing, so he just needed to go to the toilet in the morning instead of doing it in his nappy.
I started a star chart for him, with the promise of a new pair of pyjamas if he went a week without peeing in his nappy.
He's now happy in his new pyjamas, gets up to pee and is proud of being a big boy!

but if you ain't ready, you just ain't ready... this DD1 is 5.5 and had 4 dry nights while we were away on holiday over xmas, me and Dh got very excited. When we got home, on went her knickers and brolly sheet on the bed and she's been wet each night since. She was dry one night but was so horribly tired the next day from the effort it wasn't worth it. She's a very heavy sleeper and me and DH just aren't into changing beds each night at 4am so she's back in naps till she's ready. We also live in shakesville so need all the sleep we can get and while the kids are coping well who can tell it its affecting them in ways we don't see.

Hi there, With our girls we tried getting them out of their night nappies when they were about 6 1/2 - even though they hadn't been dry for more than an occasional night. Just didn't work. They were (and still are) very heavy sleepers - and although we would go in to get them up during the night, I would quite often find them sopping wet, cold (so they'd been like that for a while) and still sound asleep! So I gave up on doing it that way - and went through the mat/alarm programme (through public health nurse - after talking about it with my GP).
What a great programme. Both girls did it - one after the other, and we haven't looked back. The child has to be 7 years old to take part in the programme, as they have to "be in charge" of it (ie getting up, turing the alarm off, going to the toilet, changing the bed (which I always helped/did it) and writing in the log.
So don't stress too much. Every child is different. Our girls are still very heavy sleepers - but they now wake up during the night to go to the toilet, and are also able to sleep through without getting up. Try going without nappies, but if not successful, then don't worry. There are LOTS of kids in the same situation (at the girls school there were at least 4 other girls of the same age - that we knew of.
All the best

I honestly honestly believe you just CANT push night training Ive got 3 (now aged 5, 7, 8.5) - and the 8.5 was the last out of a night pull up and only in the last 6 months. My 2nd boy was dry really early my girl around 3-4 years. I found a direct relationship to how depp they slept, and how soon they trained. Mr 8.5 used to sleep REALLY deeply - and we tried waking and it was like waking the dead. Around the age of 8 he suddenly became easier to wake, and sure enough he was dry soon after. My 7 has never slept particulary well - or deeply - and the result dry very early. My girl was inbetween the extremes. These days we have such good products so that night wetting doesnt interfer with sleepovers and social devlopment - I just wouldnt push it .... it will happen in its own time.

My DS2 is just the same as your DD - day trained the week he turned 2, but turns 5 nxt month & is still wetting at night - sometimes as early as 10 or 11pm. And when he does soak the bed he usually just carries on sleeping. He's quite embarrassed about the pull ups - when we were camping last week he got up in the morning & chucked his wet nappy into the long grass behind the tent so the other kids didn't see and for this reason I'd really like him night trained but realise I can't push it

If you're desperate you could try 'lifting' - When DD was day trained (12 years ago lol) each night when I went to bed (around 10pm) I would get her up, sit her on the toilet, whisper "do wees Claire", she would pee while leaning on me, I would put her back to bed, she would sleep. She was still in a nappy but a REALLY deep sleeper and if I didn't her nappy would be SO wet, the sheets would all be wet every morning! Otherwise, I think its a developmental thing and unless you can leap out of bed every morning and wake them up before they pee, you have to wait it out Have to say I'm not a fan of cold turkey (sorry!) because like Kiwimum says, its a brain/bladder connection and I would hate to be left laying in wet sheets so that I would 'learn' to wake up!

It's really normal to still be wet at night, for a lot of children bn dry at night comes a lot lot later than day. my #1 day TT at 2yrs old in the blink of an eye but wasn't until around 4yrs that he was dry by night - and even that it was a total accident - like your DD his nappy was usually still soaked through at night until one night i forgot to put one on, and wham he was dry (i guess he realised he didn't have one but i didn't) basically after that I bought a few brolly sheets - and yeah we had a few accidents - but for the most part he stayed dry. I did restrict drinks in the evening (simply bcos i noticed when he drank a lot after dinner he WOULD wet), and on the way to bed id send him to the loo - even if i knew he went only half an hour ago- just a good habbit.
#2 was dry at night a few weeks after bn dry in the day at 2 1/4yrs - but had a stage after a tummy bug where he needed to go back into nappies-started soaking them through so i took them off him bcos i KNEW he could be dry at night - he had a few wet beds (with the brolly sheet) decided he didn't much like that, and went back to being dry.

This is exactly what we did. Neither of them ever had a dry nappy so one night we just took it away and they stayed dry, it must be a psychological thing where they know they have a nappy on so it is okay to go.
