My son is now 20 weeks so does that make him 5mnths? He was born on the 19th of April. Or do I go by the 19th of april untill the 19th of september for him to be five mnths? Im so confussed. The reason why Im asking as I think develpotment wise he is a bit slow which could be normal but not sure. And only worried as I had toxoplasmosis when I was 26 weeks pregnant and he was tested a week ago to show it was passed on through the placenta so now we need to wait another 4 weeks for retesting to see if it will have any effect on him. So what should he be doing at this age? My daughter at this age was sitting in a exersaucer and pulling toys into her mouth. I pulled it out today and sat him in it and he just didnt have the strength to be in it. He is not rolling yet or showing any signs. Doesnt grap toys to put in his mouth but does put his hands in his mouth and if you put a toy in his had he will put it in his mouth. He will grab a toy if you put it on his tummy aswell. Maybe I shouldnt be comparing but my daughter was rolling at this age and sitting at 5.5mnths. Am I just being paranoid or should he be doing more things? Toxoplasmosis congenital can course delayed learning.

Hi Wizz. I do exactly the same thing comparing my 20 month old to my 4 month old.
Your son sounds like he is doing very similar things to my boy who was born on the 27th April. He can roll onto his side when he feels like it and will put things into his mouth if they are there. But he does hold his head well and makes eye contact etc.
BTW I say 4 months cos I can't remember the no of weeks!

for my kids once they were past 12 weeks i would say months so 19th april to now is about 4 and half months with 19th Sept being 5 mths old.

I usually start saying 4.5 months by this time My little man is 9 months old and I've found that I've dropped the 'half' now - and when he's getting near the end of the month I go "almost 10 months old" or at the start of the month "just turned 9 months old". It's so cute when they are so tiny that they are still counted in "weeks"

My DD rolled once or twice at about 4 months old and then didn't roll again until just before her 1st birthday. I thought it was great cos she stayed in the same place when sleeping! She sat at 6 months old and went to crawling from sitting at 9 months.

Wizz - my wee girl is 6 months old... I've stopped counting weeks and just count months.
Development wise this is what my kids have done
DS - rolled back to front at 5 months, commando crawl at 7 months, crawling at 8 months, sitting around 6-7 months (would have to check book for that one). Cruising furniture at 10 months. First independent steps at 14 months
DD1 - rolled back to front at 7 months, sat at around 7 months, crawled 10 months. First independent steps at 14 months.
DD2 - rolled front to back at 4 months, back to front at 5 months. Not quite sitting at 6 months. She is rolling everywhere. She was stuffing everything into her mouth from about 4 months old.
As you can see they've all had quite different approaches to their development! And interestingly although DS was more 'advanced' early on, DD1 has learned to jump much quicker than he did and is way more verbal at the same age.
There is such a broad span of things that they can do at this age, some children are like little blobs until much later, some children are really really mobile quite early. When my son started to roll my friends son was crawling and pulling to stand. Both totally normal.
So I'd probably not compare exactly when they do things because there are so many variables. I'd look at things like - is his head pretty strong, is he tracking with his eyes, is he moving around and wiggling, is he holding himself better in your arms compared with a month or two ago... and go from there.

Oh and bringing his hands together and putting them to his mouth is really really good developmentally. Something to do with developing midline which is important for crawling and walking and all that.

Thanks everyone putting my mind at rest. Your right kiwi mum they all develop differntly. He definatly brings his hands together and puts them in his mouth. I guess Im just being really paranoid because of the toxoplasmosis thing. He was a late smiler too , didnt smile untill he was ten weeks and I worried then too which there was no need as he doesnt stop laughing and smiling now. He was due the 30th and arrived the 19th so perhaps thats why he is abit slow lol...just kidding. But hey its a good excuse to use

*bump*
my daughter is 5 mnths old. Still not rolling, while all the babes in my coffee group are doing it. Is there anyway i can encourage rolling, have got toys out to the side just out of her reach to encourage. She is wriggling bum side to side, but that is about it
TIA

Not rolling at five months isn't that slow. DS1 didn't roll until nearly 6.5months and I only ever put him on his back (no tummy time). It takes quite a lot of tummy muscle strength to roll right over onto the tummy and also lots of head control and well developed upper body muscles to keep their head/chin from hitting the floor. That wriggly bum movement is her strengthening up important muscles - other things she might do in preparation for rolling are reaching her arms across her chest, moving her head from side to side, lifting her head and feet off the floor at the same time, bringing her legs to her stomach, playing with her feet, crossing her legs over and placing the foot of the top leg on the floor, arching her back in the inverted 'C' position. Also you may find that she rolls to the side and plays on her side in a semi-side-sitting position rather than rolling right over. This is also a normal part of physical development and in fact is a very important. Placing toys to the side of her is a great way of encouraging movement to the side. She'll get there when she's ready

My DS didnt roll until after his 1st birthday. He rolled from his tummy to his back a couple of times but that was more a case of gravity helping than anything cause of his huge head He's now five and is such a bright wee dude doing all the right things and some of those exceptionally well. I wouldnt be concerned at all.

I wouldn't be concerned, though I know it is hard. I've only got the babies in the coffee group to compare with and DS is the oldest one yet doesn't do half the stuff some of the other babies are doing. He only just started rolling in the past couple of weeks and started sitting confidently about 10 days ago. He's desperate to try to crawl but can't work out how to get everything moving so if he wants anything he lies on his back lifting his bum and digs his heels in so he can move along the floor. I try not to worry about it but must admit I sometimes come away from coffee group thinking DS is slow because he wasn't doing much until a couple of weeks ago and there is a baby in coffee group who is 6 weeks younger yet has been rolling for about a month and is getting up on all 4s already , but Plunket and other friends say he's doing fine. Being a mum brings alot of worrying aye, starts when you get preggy and doesn't stop but I'm sure none of us would have it any other way
