well - ds2 at 5 weeks now

we've got him on
10mg losec (for 2.5 weeks)
neocate (for 2 weeks)
and I just started to try using Iberogast

Losec seems to be helping a little

neocate has helped but is not the magic fix that is was with ds1

started iberogast on recommendation from plunket - no really noticing anything but its only been two days.

We basically try and feed 3 hourly - after feed is he fine for about 30 min and then the crying starts. After about an hour of trying to get settle and get any other wind out we might get about 30-45 min of sleep but then the crying returns, and the cycle starts again.

With a 30 month old and a newborn and I am still trying to work part time from home Im losing it. What do you all do to try and get through the day with the crying? There is just no consistent method of soothing I have found.

I feel like we may be facing a bit of a waiting game for his system to mature more cause I haven't seen too much more we can try medically.

More hugs from me grouphug

Those days of a newborn screaming just about all day long are still fresh in my mind 3+ years later. You must be shattered! Things that worked for us were a hammock & a front pack. DS was also pretty settled when in his carseat (convertible seat not a capsule) so in the weekends we would go for a bit of a drive in the country. Was a good way to get a break from having to hold DS constantly. DS was also ok when out & about in his buggy as the constant movement helped settle him. I had to keep walking though - no stopping to look in shops etc smile

Have you tried an osteopath? It's worth a shot I think. Definitely not a cure but can help relax bubs enough so that they sleep for a few hours & very helpful if bubs had a difficult birth.

If it's possible to ditch working for a bit I would consider doing that just so it takes some pressure off you & gives you a bit of breathing space.

I hope thing improve for you guys soon!

Take care.

Gosh, brings it all back. Having a good cry helps at first, you have to let it out. I never used a frontpack/sling with DS as it didn't even occur to me, wish I did. But instead I used the bouncinet quite a bit to settle him during the day and quite often he'd just fall asleep on it and would leave him there for some much needed rest. And also driving in the car helped instantly.

The mention of seeing an osteopath sounds like a good idea, I've heard positive stories for young babies. I could only imagine how hard it is working and having a toddler to look after as well.

Best wishes.

I so hated those days and still cringe when I think about them.

For me going Dairy free helped hugely and he was put on Ranitadine.

But my god send was my friend bringing over one of those swing things for baby to lay in. It could be in about 5 diff positions from totally upright to lying flat. DS did alot of sleeping in that. It helped so much as with two other kids I couldn't have him in my arms all the time and when he was he thought he just wanted to feed and couldn't relax.

We also used an Osteopath.

Good luck and I really hope things settle for you soon. xox

I tried the Osteo with DS1 but after 3 visits I couldn't see a marked difference. Not to say that they are not valuable. I just couldn't keep dishing out 50.00 a visit with out knowing the outcome.

Wonder about the hammock - will have to see if I can borrow one. I can't tell you how much stuff I bought last time with DS1

Front pack, swing, tons of homeopathic solutions, osteo, different formulas, incline bath seat, books on babies, sleeping, etc. - special bottles that vent.

Front pack seems to be ok for a bit but then he gets irritated. I try and put him in it and go for a walk (on the cross trainer !!)
Movement is a good thing for DS2 but nothing works consistently.

DS1 was 5 months by the time we got to try Neocate, he had been on Losec for ages - so I wonder if his recovery was partly due to his system maturing.

Hugs I know what your going through...my first screamed solidily for the first four months or her life. Are you in auckland? There is a paed that can prescibe merbently for colic which is what it sounds like he has got. It could be worth a go.

Are you using actual losec brand, or the generic Dr Reddys?
You have to pay for losec now, and the Dr Reddys is free.
I have heard of lots of people reacting to Dr Reddys. Wind, sore tummy, cramps etc.

Agree with Suomi about making sure you are actually using losec.

Iberogast - is bubs constipated? I used this with DD1 later on when she had issues with constipation (it was good for that) but not to help with reflux or colic etc. I personally wouldn't use it unless there are bowel issues as it might add to the reflux.

Our turning point was at about the 4-5month mark in terms of starting to get better sleeping during the day and less crying. With DD2 I would wrap her and put into an Ergo and walk her to sleep or wrap and turn on the shower, stand next to her and jiggle her to sleep. Have a look at the Harvey Karp settling methods if you haven't already - I used variations of this for both girls and they are quite effective even with very unhappy bubbas.

Maybe in a few weeks you can look at increasing the dose of losec?

We ended up using merbentyl for the colic as it was horrendous and getting worse. We had 3 days of farting and then that was the end of the colic (we used the merbentyl for 3 days).

A hammock was a life saver for me and DD2s sleep but we only got it somewhere in the 3-4month region, prior to that she would only sleep on me and with motion (walking, standing and rocking/jiggling, lazy boy).

Hugs

Also, do you have family who can help out? Or a friend who can help with entertaining your eldest during the early days when bubs is unsettled? Do you have to keep working????

Morning
Remember the screaming so well, a year ago for us and at times still having difficult times,
We have also tried LOTS of things, Oestopath worked for a couple of days for our DS, being able to carry them around close to you is always a winner, but the thing we found the most wonderful during the day was a swing, we got a second hand one and our wee man just sat in it and listened to the music and watched us doing things, it was a wonderful thing just to have your arms free for a little while.
We also have been using a Naturopath which seemed to just relax his whole body.
As for the sleep someone said to me "one day at a time" and that is how we have made it to his first birthday, everyday is different and you just have to go with the flow and do WHATEVER works, and if it seems strange but it works DO IT!!!
Good luck and hugs
One day at a time smile
