I was just thinking ... the HUGE difference in how often people wash/change etc etc - is prob why I dislike camping so much ... and stuggled with free-camping in our camper back in April ... I personally just cant stand being in the same clothes/underwear (not even mentioning showers) for any length of time (my husband on the other hand )

I don't like camping Of any sort, it always makes me feel unclean!

what a funny thread! I am in the wearing underwear for 24 hour camp too. I have always worn knickers to bed, going right back to when I was little and wore nighties to bed, that ALWAYS ended up around my neck kids wear jammies to bed, but sometimes keep on a t-shirt that they wore during the day. And since they are still little I won't comment on the wearing clothes to bed and then the next day, never say NEVER!!!

I dont sleep nude - dont like the idea of it if i were to - I would totally change the sheets. As for being environmentally concious in regards to washing, there are more factors for us than just the environment when it comes to why I wash so frequently. My kids are 1/ very messy and grubby and not a day goes by without paint/food/crud being spilt all over their clothes. Miss 6yo included. I would never make them re-wear grubby clothes. 2/Ds1 has severe excema and carries a certain type of staph with causes nasty abcesses and cellulitus (we are talking bigger than golf ball size in just a few hours). This staph transfers to all family members and causes major problems for us all, so to counter that pjs do have to be washed daily - in consultation with his pediatrician and dermatologist in order to keep the staph infections at bay - so that goes for all of us as he gets a nasty mother of a strain of staph that has had us all in ED/hospital with abcesses and cellulitis when it gets out of control. I guess if it werent for his excema/staph I wouldnt necessarily wash the pjs everyday - but my kids DO sweat so regardless of excema/staph I would wash them anyway because they sweat. So there you go - those sitting there thinking im some sort of obsessed hygiene freak with my washing, and not thinking about the environment etc... there are more factors to consider. It would be nice if I didnt have so much washing - that would be wonderful but not a real possibility for me at all. 3boys - interesting you think along those lines considering the allergies in your children. To a point I agree however my 2yo boy gets his fair share of bacteria in his daily life, the specialists were concerned with his recurrent staph infections and nasty abscesses (and therefore almost monthly hospital admissions and also the transferring to the rest of the family) that it was they who suggested our current plan. I was personally sick of him looking like a burns victim too from all the scratching/rubbing that he does to relieve his itch and have to be on twice daily oral antibiotics just in case. This has helped beyond what we had hoped. this past year we have had just 3 hospital admissions So its whatever works for each family I guess.

But Carli, that's a logical reason for washing everything daily. What I didn't get was your insination that to do otherwise was unhygenic. Perhaps I read that wrong.

No - you would have read it the way it was intended. Regardless of excema and the issues wit that, the initial conversation was around time saving and therefore kids sleeping in full sets of clothes etc... I personally find that unhygenic and a tad lazy, as do I find not changing underwear for 24hrs or more unhygenic. Thats just my opinion though , it obviously differs to that of many who have posted here. That sort of surprised me to be honest as I would have thought people changed their clothes more often than is suggested here. After all none of us are superhuman, and we all excrete odours/bodily fluid/sweat of some description every day. People can try to justify their parenting decisions all they like in regards to social norms, time restraints, environmental components, etc... BUT no one NEEDS to justify themselves in parenting though do they? I dont recall asking for justification. Its personal preference about whatever works for you. I merely pointed out that sleeping in clothes intended for the next day is not something I would ever consider even given time restraints etc... certainly been an eyeopener for me that's for sure!

Who's making kids re-wear grubby clothes??? In my case, the kids (who decided THEMSELVES to wear clothes to bed... I didn't MAKE them) put on CLEAN clothes after their SHOWER at night... and the only clothes that get re-worn at all are - maybe - sweatshirts, provided they haven't been subjected to dirt/paint/food, and don't smell. And they don't wear them to bed anyway. (Tshirts and shorts, generally) People can try to justify their parenting decisions all they like in regards to social norms, time restraints, environmental components, etc... BUT no one NEEDS to justify themselves in parenting though do they? I dont recall asking for justification. No, you didn't. But I did feel I needed to explain myself in the face of the implication that I am a lazy sloven....

To wade into the cleanliness debate.....
We have just made the decision to wash our kids school uniform LESS frequently based on the fact that it is not dirty after one day at school in almost all cases. Kids of 5 and 7 don't sweat much. Anything that still looks clean gets worn for an extra day.
They do wear PJs and pants to bed, not really commenting on that side of the debate, I just found it interesting that we have made a conscious, environmentally-based decision to reduce our washing load because we were washing 'clean' clothes every day. And no, I can't say as I've noticed my kids suddenly stinking.
We also made the decision to wash clothes less based on being more environmentally conscious. People are definitely washing clean clothes these days esp compared to the past when washing machines weren't as efficient or non-existent and washing powders were less "sanitising". And for us personally, we also made the decision to wash the kids less (and their clothes less) due to the allergy-hygiene theory. Basically kids are too clean these days and their environments are too sanitised and there isn't enough germs and bacteria to stimulate their immune systems to work well enough. Washing and cleanliness is definitely about a social norm and has changed and adapted through time - now we wash and clean more than we've ever done in Western society.

This is really interesting to read, Perhaps I do wash clothes too much too. Basically our rule here is if you have worn it and take it off, it gets washed. Ive never really though about it before, just what I do. PJs get washed on average id say every 2nd day. My boys sleep in PJs in winter and boxers in summer and boy do they sweat at night. Def not an undie wearer at night here. It IS important to let your bits breath!

So - if I slept nude - would I wash the sheets the next day - not necessarily (although quite possibly, as there is normally only one reason I sleep like that )

So, just wondering re those who wash pyjamas everyday, if you slept in the nude, would you wash your sheets everyday? i could never sleep in the nude, what if there was a fire/burglar, child vomitting....not to mention the snuggliness of flanelette, plus i feel all exposed and naked without pj's which i dont like (some ppl do, so hey each to their own) main reason i wash pyjamas (almost)everyday is bcos they spill breakfast down them, or get dribbles of wee with that early morning barely awake wee, or and this is gross DS#1 plays with his bellybutton in bed then rubs his finger all over his jammies and they get this all over stale bum whiff smell (cant properly locate it..but its there) no marks or anything  my boys both sweat like jacket potatoes in bed too (mostly in the first hour or so of going to sleep) have often had to go and towel them off so they dont catch a chill, even in the midle of winter, so i guess for them wearing 2morows clothes to sleep prob wouldnt be a great practice...if they didnt do any of that stuff then id def consider it im ALLL for saving 5mins in the morning....every extra 5mins you get in the morning is like a full hours worth overnight however that said and done, im trialing DS in his soccer kit tonight lol, i figure if he makes it a bit smelly...who cares, no ones going to chase him around sniffing him at soccer tomorrow which is bloody early, and we always come str8 home to shower and throw uniform in the wash anyway (plus he'll prob put thermals underneath so it'll be those that stink not the kit hehe). undies...well im guilty of wearing tummy holdy inny ones in the day...and at night when i take them off and put on my cotton loose fitting nana ones and my jammies it is the equivalent of taking off heels, and my tummy says 'ahhhhhh' thanku manda...flomp out it falls

My girls so the same as MC girls, in the hallway we have a fun chart of the things to do in the morning.
If my girls aren't ready for school i would take them in there PJ's Ive only had to do it once so far, but i wouldn't have a problem with doing it again
7 years old is old enough to get ready themselves
