I went for a scan today as they wanted to have a look at my uterus to try and determine a cause of recurrent pregnancy loss. There was this mass appearing which could be leftover tissue from my last miscarriage 06/10 or could be a polyp. More likely a polyp. Anybody with a history of miscarriage has these? What did they do?

Hi Mumof5angels I don't know if a polyp would be the same as a fibroid. I have 3 of those, last year I had 2. Nothing has been done with it. But then I'm 41 and it is not uncommon to have fibroids with this age. I guess it might be more difficult to nestle where a fibroid is, but this pg nestling was difinitly on another spot and still a poor result.

Are you going to discuss your scan results with a specialist?

Thanks mumof5angels,
I made the choice not to go for D&C and let nature take it's course. Today I noticed a colleage was surprised and shocked to find out that I am still 'carrying'. But then I found out fairly soon this time because I asked for early scans. And in the past I was 11 weeks and the baby stopped growing weeks earlier and I became alright after. So I think my body will be able to cope.

I hope the specialist can give some clarity for you.

I think polyps and fibroids are very similar, except that fibroids are muscle-based and polyps are skin/flesh based. Both are generally harmless, but sometimes can cause issues if they grow very large or are in a spot where they can get in the way.

I have five uterine fibroids. They found three while I was pregnant with my son - one reacted to my pregnancy hormones by growing to about 8cm across, making a strange little bump just under my ribs. But it was at the top of my uterus so wasn't a problem; in fact my son seemed to enjoy kicking it around (we think it was growing on a stalk). It didn't hurt at all and shrank to about 2cm across after I'd given birth.

If the large fibroid had been low in my uterus I may not have been able to give birth naturally but that's about the worst of it. With future pregnancies I think that if an embryo tried to embed itself into my uterus at the same location as a fibroid then that would be a problem.

I'm not sure about treatment for polyps but with fibroids they don't usually recommend trying to remove them because cutting them out is riskier than leaving them. So I mostly try not to think to much about them since there's nothing I can do.

It's kind of a pain how we have technology that can tell us about these things, but haven't yet developed the technology/treatments to actually fix them.

So I don't know, but I'd be surprised if an ovarian polyp was causing miscarriage - I thought the ovaries pretty much just release an egg and then it's up to the uterus to carry the pregnancy? I guess your dr will advise. Hopefully they have some answers for you.

Thanks for the information meg. That has cheered me up actually beacuse I was thinking oh I will have to have it removed and that will bew more waiting and recovery.
You are right I do believe there is stuff we are better off not knowing about.

I have had an unusually heavy period this month, wonder if that's got anything to do with the polyp?

Could be, I was told that my usually heavy periods are related to the fibroids. But it could also be just the first period after MC.

Last year I had my first period 3,5 weeks after the MC in June. I ended up in hospital because it was so heavy! I thought maybe retained products or a ruptured vein. It was really scarry and I thought I might bleed to death. They kept me for a night and scanned me the next morning. Nothing unusual except a very, very heavy period. I ended up with aenemia and it took 6 months to come right. And yes, I asked for blood transfusion, but they thought it wasn't nescessary.

OMG loss4(5)times I have had almost the same thing.I had a HUGE bleed on Monday very scary. Anyway got scanned. They wanted to pack me off home and come back for ANOTHER scan. Finally a great ob said nope enough of this, this woman has been scanned and scanned and nothing is changing. Put me on an acute list for hystrocophy (???sp)

I went in at 7am. They had a very good look. Retained product. Given a dnc then and there and guess what I don't feel well physically but I feel this is FINALLY OVER!!!
