disagree there.
When they hypo, they are not being naughty or difficult. Any source of glucose to treat it quickly is fine by me. Sugar, lollies, jam. When I do a large amt of exercise, I am desperate for food and a bit scratchy, but my blood sugar is within normal limits, I cant even begin to imagine what a ferocious craving a low must feel like.

I give James more insulin when he has more sweets, just as the pancreas of his brothers would

Just interested which bit you disagree with? I guess it all comes down with how we chose to deal with it for our own children.

Oh apple juice is a good one too, old fashion red apple juice. fast acting.

I disagree with making any issue out of food.
Hypos are treated with what ever is to hand, then a normal meal to follow

Fair enough, my advice is just that advice though along with pearls of wisdom that I've been told by parents of teen diabetics, and watching what my Aunt is going through with her 13 year old boy.

As I said it all comes down to how you chose to deal with it.

I have to say though I am loving the pump in terms of not having to have him eat a carb snack post hypo. nothing worse than convincing a 3-4 year old to eat a sandwich at 3am.

Where do you guys get the glucose tabs from then? I can only get them through DSL, which means a $5 p+p fee, which I think is a bit steep for a few packets. Or from Adrian Coombes, our local DYNZ rep, and since he's also national chairman, he's not always in town. That's the main reason I gave up on the tabs. Just too hard to get hold of sometimes.

I get ours from Diabetes supplies, but I also get ketone test strips lancets and sauces and stuff for my dad so the P&P isn't so bad then.

Thanks Eloise ...
Keep missing you at Clinic. How is James going with the Pump?

We are having our Advanced Carb Counting session next week, and then it will be all systems go... And they reacon by Christmas at the latest we should be hooked up.

I am excited for Hayley, but she keeps saying she doesnt want a pump stuck on her bum; I am hoping once she experiences the joy of eating without being injected first will come as quite a relief for her.

Hayley gets her fair share of treats ... I am just not too keen on a lolly cake, as I know what her idea of one is (cake in the middle filled with lollies, and then a chocolate dome plopped on top and that is smothered with MnM's ... the only way in is with a hammer .... she has been looking in my books.

Our next clinic is on the 16 July, so hopefully we will see you then.

Christine

Gabe doesn't like his sites in his bum either which I can understand. But his belly needs a rest after almost 3 years of sticking needles into it, but in saying that his tummy is the only place that has any fat on it.

lol Taznunu, that sounds yummy but i felt my blood sugars rising just thinking about it.

James likes his sites on his tummy (like granddad) They seem to last so much better there, and are not irritated by clothes and nappies or the toilet.
I cover them with a large tegaderm (clear dressing) so they dont get sand, etc in them lol
Thats exactly it with a pump! aim towards normality, no needles for food! Eat if hungary and dont if not! Such a big thing with wee ones.
James is coming up to a year since diagnosis, so I think a dinner of his choice is fair. Most likely chips and chocolate
I have not had a clinic appt letter, but would be great to catch up if we have same day!

Sugarmonkey we get ours from the chemists in Palmy most of them have them but they are often hard to find. We finally have a start date for daycare Jewel starts on Monday after we had to change daycares as the one she was going to decided to class her as special needs and we were still waiting a month after her start date for them to decide how they were going to work it. The new daycare we only visited last Thursday and she starts next Monday no problems at all and they are already happy testing her etc. smile

Tari - we used to get them from Palms, then they had a problem with the suppliers. I've never seen them at any others. I might do some ringing around. Is that the Dextro tabs?

Good luck with the daycare. Jewel will love it.

What's their P+P charges like Jane.
Tari - do you get the la vita tabs. I rung every chemist in town and none have dextro tabs. La vita just disintegrate in the tube for us.

Their postage and packing is shocking Stacie - I just about flipped out BUT we got a lot of tabs for the price so I think it evened out compared to what we pay here per tablet.

I used to get dextro tabs at Palms, but they've stopped stocking them. Phillip does ok with lollies. He hasn't got a sweet tooth so I know he won't overdo them or do anything silly with insulin to get more.

Hi all - it's been ages since I've been on here! Lots to read up on.

Hypos - we use the Carrero gel - its on the diabetes supplies website, but most pharmacies stock or can get it. Make sure you hit them up for a discount as there is a pretty big markup as they usually stock them for "althetes". We find they're good as they're easy to carry, ready-made & for the 1-2yr age group they only need about 1/2 to bring them up - pretty handy when DS is going "nuts".

Gosh since I last posted a lot has happened/changed:

DS going to daycare 3 mornings a week - the staff just check DS BSL before his lunch. Anything abnormal they call me - only twice in 12 wks (both minor queries) so pretty happy! Has meant I can do a little work/chores/time out so that's nice. I just come in, work out his CHO & give DS MDI before I take him home after lunch. He REALLY loves it there which is awesome. We are fortunate that the staff are willing to make the effort too.

Still on MDI 2-5 x a day but have a pump start date: 16/08/10 which ironically is 1 year (+ 2 days) since diagnosis & just before DS 2nd birthday.

As it turned out we managed to get community funding & then the DHB is coming to the party too, so that's all good news!

Ok this is getting pretty long now so will sign off for now!

Have decided to make each year a family event, where we do something active, and have a healthy picnic.
This year...wave pools and chicken sushi (james fav)

Our little 2 year old has just finished 6 days on the continuous glucose monitor (sensor). Its a shame that it can't be part of our everyday life but of course thats not possible.
I have been quite suprised about its accuracy not as spot on as I would have thought, they say it gets within 20%.
Anyway I today I will upload for our Diabetic Educators to have a look at her trends.
Lets hope the information gained and the changes to her pump will give her better BGL readings!
