Hi all

Just a quick question for now!

I have just read that Losec (Omeprazole) is most effective if taken 30 mins before a meal.
My son has a breastfeed more or less first thing in the morning (he sits with his Dad watching TV for a short while first). Then maybe about 20 mins later he has breakfast. So I was going to give him the medication after his breastfeed (before his breakfast). Or should I really be giving it to him 30 mins before his breastfeed (trouble is with that, he'd be unwilling to wait that long)?

I've only just started him on Losec today and I'd just hate to think that it wasn't working properly just because I gave it to him at the wrong time.

What does everyone else do (with the timing of giving it)?

Also, for a toddler (mine is 20 months), what type of food do you give it with (a teaspoon of pureed fruit, yoghurt?) - I'm just wondering what would be most practical - am thinking probably not yoghurt as once opened you can't really use it for much longer. So maybe if I puree some fruit (pears?) and keep that in a container in the fridge?

I had better get to bed!!

My son reacts to milk and pears so he has his Losec granules on apple, we used to use the Watties baby food tins, but have found it cheeper (and the same stuff) to buy a 100% apple sauce

Hi there,
We have found that 30 mins after a milk feed works best for our kids as they have Gaviscon in their milk. I usually put the granules in with a little fruit, usually pear as she seems to have a problem with apple, about a teaspoon is fine. We give it to her at lunchtime as she is happier to wait half an hour after her milk before having the rest of her lunch than she is at other times of the day. We have found that fruit seems to work best as it is a little acidic which helps the losec to be absorbed. I use either fruit I have pureed or stuff from a jar depending on how organised I am! If you make up a load of fruit that you know he is ok with and freeze it in icecube trays then you can defrost one cube at a time and then add the losec once it is ready to eat.

I would advise that in your situation it is best to give the Losec as soon as he gets up on either fruit or yoghurt - whichever is most practical for you. Let him sit with dad on the couch for however long he will and then continue with your day as normal - but hopefully happier. Losec turns off the proton pumps and these operate more during the day and produce more acid in response to food. Hence the earlier in the day you give it the better, and if you give it before the breastfeed it will be working at least by the time he has breakfast.
It can take three weeks to reach its full effectiveness.
Best wishes.
