hi everyone
for the past month or so my 7.5 month year old has been doing this strange quick opening and closing movement of both her hands. It didnt concern us at first but she seems to be doing it more n more lately n now im starting to worry.I dont know if its related to her reflux?is it something shes doing out of anxiety as shes refluxing,or is it just something shes doing thats not significant and just a baby thing,i dont know.My husband keeps suggesting its the latter as shes developing and growing well other than her horrendous reflux, but im still v concerned. Its almost like involuntary or perhaps voluntary spasms of her hands. She does it a LOT when shes drinking milk which makes me think its reflux related but I just dont know.Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Thanks.

Have a vague feeling I have read something about hand movement and feeding reflexes, but cant for the life of me remember where it was I read it. It was quite noticable with Caitlin for awhile when she fed, but she grew out of it. Am sure its something to do with feeding reflexes. No doubt there will be some wonderful woman on this forum who knows the exact answer!!

Your title caught my eye from the main page, I don't usually visit this forum because my children didn't have reflux. However ,what you describe sounds exactly what my dd did for quite a few months - does it happen other than when she's feeding? I remember being a bit concerned about it but didn't get it checked out or anything. Anyway, she outgrew it maybe when she was about 10-11mths or so. I found she'd do the same thing when she learnt to stack blocks, and her arm would go in and out in and out (and hands opening and closing quite quickly) until she sussed it and then grabbed it. What I did find though is her precision when she did grab it was spot on. So although my ds would just grab and miss he didn't care, but she seemed to take her time and it was like her brain and hand were working together before actually meeting the object. I also noticed her doing it when she would reach for finger food when she was sitting on the floor opposed to in her highchair (different angle she had to look at and reach at) - it would take her about a minute to pick up a single piece of food! Anyway, I believe it's all part of the development of hand/eye co ordination. But if you do have a paediatritian appt sometime soon, I'd just bring it up to settle your fears.

When I went to a PMP training meeting the lady talked about massaging the baby's hand when feeding if there were feeding difficulties. I think you are right, that it is probably feeding related and I wouldn't worry but mention it next time you have a visit with a health professional.
