Hi all, I am new to the site. I just wanted to share with you all my experience. Like many of you, our little boy (first child) was very unsettled. He fed well, but would scream and need to be upright for most of the day (yay for frontpacks!). He would also be in agony after a feed until he burped/spilled what seemed like most of his feed. As a first time mum, I just thought that this was my lot, that this was the baby I had been given and I should probably just stop moaning and get on with it. Again, we told our midwife and Plunket nurse that he was spilling a LOT but were told that this was normal. It was not until at 3 months he stopped putting on weight that we were sent to the doctor. This is where it gets interesting. We have an
English trained doctor. He immediately prescribed Metoclopramide. This is an anit-nausea drug - strengthening the sphincter at the top of the stomach and relaxing the one at the bottom, encouraging digestion rather than reflux. It took a while, but I am happy to report that at 5 months old, our wee fella is feeding well, burping DRY burps (great excitement, you will be aware!) and has just got into the habit of sleeping great long stretches at night. (have gone 10/11 hours! yay!). I just wanted to share this with you as I see on the Crying over spilt Milk website that Metoclopromide is seldom prescribed. Our doctor said that in New Zealand, he has fond that GPs/Paeds generally prescribe the Gaviscon-type meds first then get onto others if the problem persists. In England, however, they tend to give an anit-nausea first to curb the problem straight away and to encourage weight gain. Yes, the medication does have side effects, but only when overdosing occurs. Yes, the side effects are apparently alarming, but we have never seen them. At 5 months, Cameron is only having half a ml twice a day which is already half his original dose. I cannot thank my GP enough and realise how lucky I am to have got my hands on this medicine. It was only by going to the COSM website that I realised how rare it is for this med to be prescribed. All I can tell you is that it has definitely worked wonders for Cameron, his dad and I. We feel human again!

Hi and welcome

Great that you have found something that works for you. We were prescribed this as well and I tried it for a week or so witout sucess but I was very afraid of the side effects (which I had been told were quite common) so we stopped it.

I was prescribed it for my own morning sickness at 8 weeks and found it fantastic - I would have spent the rest of my pregnancy in the hospital if it wasn't for Metoclopramide

Our family haven't had such great results with Metoclopramide but everyone reacts differently. Problems do occur with it more often than other anti-nausea medications. My sister, myself and my eldest have all reacted to it.
Great that it has worked for you and thanks for sharing.
