Has anybody had experience with Ranbaxy-cefaclor suspension? Dr has prescribed it for Caitlin and thought it would be GF but was not sure.
Have checked with the pharmacy and they say that the capsules are 100% gluten free but cant say either way with the suspension (even after checking with supplier!!)

Does anyone know? Do I risk it and try, maybe a trace of gluten will be ok. I guess I may have to weigh up whats worse, screaming until the glutens out of the system or an infection getting worse.

This is probably not any help at all but our paed said to try to avoid all antibiotics because of their ingredients and what effect they will have on an already delicate digestion system. He said only use them if they are REALLY needed.

Just Googled this - doesn't appear to have gluten.

Ranbaxy-Cefaclor oral suspension contain xanthan gum, sodium benzoate, sucrose, colloidal silicon dioxide, FD & C Red No 40 (allura red AC), strawberry flavour, sodium citrate, citric acid and simethicone.

Oh I AM A GENIUS!

Great site - just had a nosey at all our drugs and they all seem fine except I can't find Losec - Zantac is there. I wonder what that means? Could that be the reason for all the wind it's caused us and others? Hmmm just something else to drive myself nuts over

Tracy, wouldn't panic too much at this stage about the losec not being on the list as couldn't find Pamol on the list and I know for certain that it IS Gluten Free. May be worth checking at some stage though.
The wind has gone completely for us, and really dont know why......am guessing it is because of everything we have removed from Caitlins diet.

Losec was one of the 1st drugs I questioned my pharmaist about and she rang the company and YES it is diffenatly gluten free!!Gosh my pharasist must think I am totally nurotic!!Just for the record to Titralac tabs are gluten free.

You are right I looked at the data sheet and it doesn't contain gluten but it does contain lactose ... I wonder what that means for someone who has a dairy allergy? We aren't on losec any more so doesn't matter to us but would love to know why we had so much trouble with it!

Oh no the plot thickens!!!!!!If its not one thing it is another we had a problem with lactose in inhalers and had to stop them.We are decreasing losec another 10mg tomorrow for the month of july down to 20mg at night then decreasing further from there So hopefully we wont be on losec for too much longer.Fingers and toes crossed

Hey, tagz, am I right in thinking you mean that the data sheet for Losec mentions it contains lactose? Or have I got my wires crossed?
If its Losec then that would explain so much why Catherine was absolutely awful for the six months we tried (and tried!) to change her to Losec from Ranitidine. She is dairy intolerant and always has been. While bf I had to avoid *all* dairy, in any form. Even the slightest amount would have her reacting (wind, snuffles, runny poos) within 12 hours.

another thought, of those people who found Somac better than Losec, how many have a dairy intolerance/allergy? Could this be the cause? If so, I wonder if it might be worth trying Somac instead of Losec. The medicating 3x daily with Zantac and in between with Gaviscon is looming to be a bit of a nightmare now Catherine's at Kindy. This is why we were so persistant with trialling Losec. I was hoping to find something that would be better suited to her being more indenpendent at kindy (and later on at school).
Opinions anyone? Especially those who find Somac better...

Yes I found it on the data sheet for Losec. I'm sure it would be a very tiny amount but we had no end of trouble on it so you just never know! The data sheet for Somac said it was gluten and lactose free.

Lactose is the sugar found in all mammal's milk and a lactose intolerance is different to a cow's milk protein allergy. A baby that can tolerate breastmilk when the mother is on a dairy free diet is allergic to the proteins not lactose as the mother will produce this whether or not she is dairy free. Lactose intolerance is rarer than cow's milk protein allergy. There is some information on our site regarding this.
It would appear from the datasheet that Ranbaxy-Cefaclor is gluten free - it is just the strawberry flavour that would be an unknown. I don't actually see it on that gluten free list though - other brands but not ranbaxy. It isn't a NZ list.
I personally for me didn't find Somac as good as Losec but I now know that the dosages aren't equivalent and maybe my GP had me on the same dose. It is certainly worth a try.
