My 2 year old son has just started a course of this today. He has had about 3 courses of this before. He is having it in the morning. He has been very unsettled all day, with one melt down after another I can't remember it having an effect on his moods before. Normally he has been on 3mls for 3 days this time it will be 5mls for 2 days then 3mls, it could be a long 3 days!!!
Could this be a normal reaction to Redipred? Thanks
Vicky Lee

I get the same with my DS so I give it to him at night and he sleeps off the effect.

Hey Vicky Lee. Both my boys have had Redipred a couple of times and for us we have NO side effects from it. However I do know alot of others whose kiddies do have similar things happen.

You know with Redipred it is NOT like AB's - you don't have to finish the course. My Dr said I only had to give it till I felt the boys had gotten over the worst of it. So when I get a 5 x days dose which is what I normally get I would normally only give them about 2 x days worth cause it has a pretty instant affect with my boys....

DS1 is truly dreadful on Redipred.

Yip I find at night time is best to give it. Depends on which dr is prescribing to weather they say morning or night.
Another one here that hates the stuff but boy it works wonders on the breathing

I won't ever give DB Redipred again, he was horrific on it. Couldn't sleep, had night terrors and was a misery for over a week.

It sounds like a normal reaction, though our limited experience is that it can vary.

My DD is on day 2 of a 5 day redipred course at the moment and seems maybe a little more exuberant than normal (she is very active anyway). This is in contrast to the last time she had it, a few months ago; that time it changed her behaviour considerably with tantrums, unsettled, difficultly sleeping etc. Given her earlier reaction I was reluctant to give her another course but her asthma had been bad for a week and not improving. Now I wish I had got her on it earlier!

We have been advised to give it to her in the morning to minimise the risk of it disturbing her night sleep, which has worked for us.

Hi

My daughter got diagnosed with asthma today after taking her to the gp wondering why she was coughing to try to catch her breathe. She'd been like this since late yesterday evening.

We got 3 days worth of redipred and were told to give it to her first thing in the morning as it causes children to be hyperactive so I'm surprised that your child is able to sleep the effects of the steroid off.

Apparently ventolin can make your child hyperactive as well as this is what we were told.

My DS is on 5ml redipred for 7 days. He takes first thing in the morning then acts like he has ants in his pants for an hour or so, then gets really lethargic. But then around bedtime it's all drama and tantrums and legs aching!!

If I didn't know it worked so great I definitely would not be giving it to him. I know I'm in for a rough ride when he takes it but his asthma improves so fast!

Had prednisone once myself and thought I needed institutionalisation. Can definitely relate to how hard it is!

My son was just diagnosed with asthma this morning at the A&E, and given this medication and was told could cause hyperness. Considering he was quite down in the dumps this morning, he's certainly perked up, his amount was 6mls for 3 days.

My 15 month old is like this, and DD and I are still suffering the effects frown

He had to take it for 4 days, but I only gave him 3 days worth (Fri, Sat, Sun). Over the weekend, and Mon & Tues (today) he is absolutely scary. Hugely wild tantrums (have just come out of the other side of a 30 minute screaming fit where I had to put him in his rarely used play pen).

What on EARTH causes this reaction? frown sad

It also blew his stomach up like a balloon and he was quite uncomfortable for the three days I gave him the steroids. I did give it with food at breakfast, but he's not eating a hell of alot as he has a cold/asthma as well.

awww

unfortunately this drug does really affect some people badly and the more you take for longer the worse it is - and there can be a withdrawl issue. Feeling ill from the cold and asthma won't be helping either. Hopefully the side affects will settle quickly.
