We now have the pain fully under control thanks to the gaviscon which he is having with every bottle, but the amount he now spills is horrendous, he seems to be a happy chucker now though - it just spills out and he's all smiles lol where as previously he would've cried when that happened - although he wasn't spilling much back before the Gaviscon.

Is there anything to help reduce the spilling now that the pain is controlled?

Gaviscon is usually the best thing to help reduce spilling. As long as he has no other complications from spilling, then there is no need for any more treatment. Losec and Ranitidine will not help with spilling. It becomes a laundry issue and things should improve as he matures. Here are some tips to help you cope: http://www.cryingoverspiltmilk.co.nz/AdviceTips/SpillyVomitingBaby-IdeasfromParents.htm

Well our amount of spilling has decreased dramatically!!!

Decided to try and lil man on some solids, the poor boy would be sitting on your knee and watching you eat and reaching for what you have, so gave him a snow pea to munch on (they are still in the pod and he can't bite through it yet)as that's what he was reaching for lol. He put it straight into his mouth to chew on, stopped - thought about it, probably because it was cold and a different texture - then started chewing on it again. It's funny as when you would go to put something in your mouth, he would open his mouth aswell, like he thought he was getting some - so decided to go with the baby led weaning and try him with a bit of his own food.

Well he loved it - he even trys to help feed himself by holding the spoon with yourolleyes (note - disaster lol) opens his mouth in anticipation and swallows it, so isnt' confused between the bottle and food which is good.

So we have been on baby rice & carrot for a week now and his reflux has improved so much, to the point daycare even mentioned yesterday that he hardly spills now and asked had we put him on a medication to keep his milk down? Where as previously him and the other reflux baby would just be spilling all day and between the two of them would make quite a mess lol.

He doesn't bring his solids back up at all, and the bottle that follows on a bit later before bed stays down completely aswell. So it's just the feeds during the day now he is still spilling, but as said - hardly anything now.

I imagine in a few months time, and solids get fully introduced rather than just a little bit at dinner time, we might be lucky and have full control of the reflux.

Roz, now he is spilling less and less - is he still needing Gaviscon for every single feed?? Or do i leave weaning him off that until he has stopped spilling completely?

I have weaned him off the infacol and the colimed now and he is coping fine without the two of those, so it is just the gaviscon that is left.

You could try without the Gaviscon. Try dropping one sachet a day, and see what happens. If he doesn't cope with it, you can always give it after a feed.

It will be the baby rice thickening his feeds reducing the spilling. You might want to offer some after/before every bottle. 1 tsp of rice to every 50mls of formula he has had should do the trick. http://www.cryingoverspiltmilk.co.nz/Food/ThickeningAgentsforReflux.htm

Well done!

NB: Although the recommendations have been changed to delay solids until around 6 months a lot of the data suggests anytime after four months when the baby shows signs of being ready is perfectly fine.
