DS (6) started on Azathioprine at the beginning of this week and has had horrible nausea and vomiting with the last 2 doses.

Has anybody experienced the same, and if so, did the body adjust to the medication ok? How long did it take to see 'positive' effects from the meds?

DS has not experienced any side effects to his other Crohns meds so this is all new teritory for us.

Thanks for taking the time to read/reply.

Hi there,
Is DS taking the whole dose of azathioprine at once? That could be contributing to the nausea. When I first went on azathioprine a few years ago it did make me a bit nauseous. I was taking 100mg a day at dinnertime. My specialist recomended that I try splitting the dose, by taking 50mg with breakfast, and 50mg with dinner, and my nausea did get better. A few months down the track I had the dose increased by another 50mg, and was able to take the increased dose with no difficulty. Perhaps I had adjusted to it then.

I hope that DS feels better soon.

Im sorry to hear your wee man isnt feeling the best.
I was unable to tolerate azathioprine at all as it make me constantly nauseous so I was put on Mercaptopurine (6MP) which does the same thing.

So if your son is still having trouble after splitting the dose as Vintner suggested maybe you could talk to his doc about the possibility of taking 6MP instead?

Good Luck - I hope he feels better soon smile

Thank you so much for your replies.

I will get into contact with his Specialist today and see what they suggest. We have started with a low dose that is to be greadually increased but am wondering if it is worth trying to split the dose so he is doing half the dose morning and night.

Thanks for the suggestions.

My son started on Azathiaprine a month ago and the nausea initially was horrendous, as were the fever and chills. This has now settled down, so hopefully your symotms have too. He takes 100mg in the morning. We never had it suggested to split the dose. Interesting !

Hubby was on Azathiaprine and was unable to tolerate it - even splitting it to morning/evening doses. He is now on Mercaptopurine (6MP). He has only been on it for 5 days and has been nauseous for most of the time (so bad he is unable to work so far this week).
Roscoe - are you on the 6MP? And how is your body reacting to it?Or what are you on now and is it working?
We have started him a notebook to record how he is feeling to take to his next specalist appointment to help her assess the next steps in his treatment

Yes Im on 6MP Nicola - At 1st when they started me straight off on 150mg I was nauseous as hell.
As it takes months to really become effective I was told it wouldnt hurt to start on a lower amount and up it as I could to the required dose as it will be in my system regardless. My Gastro said that as long as I can tolerate the nausea at a certain dose, to persevere and it should come right after a week or so. So I lowered mine to a dose I could tolerate for a week or so then gradually upped it.

I am only on a maintenace dose of 50mg a day at the moment as Im pregnant and both times now Ive gone into a remission of sorts while pregnant. I will up it again gradually once baby is born.

The trial and error with the drugs really does suck doesnt it frown I hope your husband can find a happy medium with his meds that help smile
