Hi,

Can anyone share their knowledge and experience with me please. We have a 7.5mth old boy who has reflux a mild dairy allergy but appears to be intollerant to lots of other foods. He reacts to pear (rash and stomach aches) baby rice (screamed while eating), and has stomach aches with pumpkin & kumara. We are currently seeing Rohan for allergies and Anna as a dietitian - she suggested we try our son on Golden Circle Sweet Potatoe and Green Beans and so far hes doing okay on these 2 foods alone and has improved a lot since stopping all the other food (he used to need him tummy rubbed for hours in the night and always did loud excessive swallowing). We did food patch testing which seemed to be a waste of time as the results came back unconclusive. He has weak reaction to beef chicken and pear as he reacted with 'doubtful reaction' to everything they tried except the celery which was fine so im guessing he just has sensitive skin which would make sense as we are finding it hard to get a cream that would suit and help his eczema.

Anyway the next step we have to take is a biopsy to check for EE. I guess im just after experiences of what EE actaully means... and if your baby was diagnosed what actually happens from there, and if your baby came back negative what steps did they then take to find out what was wrong with your baby? Did you find the test useful. My husband and i have so many questions as we obviously dont want to put him through a biopsy if we dont have to (we kind of lost faith in the allergy testing thing with the food patch testing)but if it WILL help to get him right then of coarse we will.

Any help appreciated, thanks.

Hi
Totally appropriate to post this here as EE and reflux often exist together. Has your son been treated/tested at all for gastric reflux as some of what you describe could be that? The gastroscopy will show this up anyway if it is causing damage. I would go ahead and get it done, and then you know.

There was a good article on Medscape recently on EE but you need to join to view it. I can email it to you if you pm me your email address. Or was it you who replied to the message over at Treasures?

My eight year old reacts to dairy and gluten that we know of, but can now tolerate some soy. She had surgery for her gastric reflux at age eight years because it was obvious she was refluxing significant volumes even though the acidity was well controlled. We did discuss EE at the time but decided to leave investigating this until later. The surgery has helped heaps but she does still have some symptoms and a lot of these appear to be allergic. I also have similar symptoms with dairy, gluten, tomato and pork.
