Hello all, *waves*

Well, DD2 is now 4 weeks old and 1 week ago she started projectile vomiting. Im not sure what causes it and if its a reflux thing. Before the vomiting started she would be put in her hammock and bring up wind and she would taste what was in her mouth if that makes sense. She is always coughing and gets very upset with hiccups after each feed. I rang my midwife last week the first time the vomiting happened and she said it sounds like wind trapped causing her to do so. But projectile??

She is pretty settled otherwise & I have her head raised in her hammock more but just wondering if there is any other practical things I can do and if this sounds like something I need to visit the doctors for?

We are buring every 20-30mls of formula & having a break in the middle.
DD1 had silent reflux and was a nightmare and sooo unsettled..but this is a whole new ball game.

Also just wanted to add- it doesnt happen every feed..perhaps once or twice a day.

Also, I was just thinking it also started when I stopped giving her half breast milk (before she was being breastfeed with formula top ups) and then transitioned to EMB in a bottle and formula if that makes a difference.

Could be a dairy intolerance/allergy .... and the tasting in the mouth after a feed sounds like might be acid coming back up ...

Thanks Dolphin. How can they diagnose a intolernace/allergy?

She spends a lot of time moaning in her sleep as well and can take ages getting to sleep. Also have been getting her out of bed and she smells like sick...I was just thinking my midwife couldn't work out what was wrong because she wouldnt latch and stay on to breastfeed..would arch her back, and scream and fart. The midwife seemed to think it was wind. But at the start of a feed? We even went to find out if she was tongue tied.

I guess what Im wondering is how do I approach things with my midwife that is coming to see us tommorow? Does it sound as though DD needs to be medicated?

I got projectile vomiting when there was a really big bubble at the bottom of her tummy. It is frigging gutting to watch the meal come back up like that.

The fussing and arching could be linked to your letdown as well (leading to gulping and wind etc as well) - but I would be inclined to medicate to be on the safe side - it does sound like you are heading down the reflux path

Well we went to the doctors today and he has given me some retitidine *spelling to try and also suggested a low allegan type formula so I brought the Karicare HA formula. He felt maybe she might also be lactose intolerant also.

I have noticed and forgot to tell the doctor that some of her vomits have long mucusy clear strings in them. What does this generally mean?

We are going back in a weeks time for a check up so will mention it then but is it anything I need to get her back to the doctors back faster?

Rather than introducing formula you may find it is better/easier to modify your diet and continue breastfeeding

Mucosy - probably nothing to worry about - we get them too but metion it anyway

I really should have made my post clearer sorry!
I stopped breastfeeding at 3 weeks because she wouldnt stay latched on and would scream at me..so put her on formula..which is when the vomiting started.

In that case if she still struggles with the HA formula then push for pepti jnr/ neocate

Hi
It sounds like you doctor has given you some good advice. It can take up to three weeks on the correct dose of Ranitidine to see an improvement in reflux symptoms related to acidity/pain. The dosage chart is on Crying Over Spilt Milk. Don't change the dosage yourself but you may need to take her back to the doctor sooner for review if she gains weight fast or the dose isn't correct, or she gets worse.
HA formula is a good start as 40% of our babies with reflux have a cow's milk allergy. Formula in itself can worsen reflux too as it is harder to digest but it sounds like you tried hard to continue breastfeeding in a difficult situation so it is not your fault. HA formula though isn't designed for babies with a cow's milk allergy only those at risk so if it fails to work or continue to work, see your doctor or phone the dieticians at Nutricia for advice.
Lactose Intolerance is rare in an infant except for after a gastro bug in which case it is only temporary. Breastmilk always contains lactose so that doesn't fit your history either.
