grouphug so sorry you're having a disaster sia11. What is the cake you're making? Is it the cake itself that is giving you trouble ( ie could you change recipes) or the decoration that is a nightmare?

First it was the cake - I was trying to make a giant cupcake but despite following the cake place recommendations for greasing the tin the cake stuck (both sides of it as you make the top and bottom separate but its part of the same tin) and broke majorly trying to get it out!!!
Tried to salvage it but was too far gone so had to bin that cake!

So made a plain round choc cake and iced it and was going to pipe on a big flower decoration (Gee's idea since I couldn't find our cake book to get any inspiration and google images wasn't much help tonight) so started piping and the icing kept melting so thickened it up and wouldn't pipe Grrrrrrrrr So made a different type - same thing happened cry

So drew on the flower using thing piping and just filled it in with more icing (spreading with a knife) and then just added these flower candy decorations - Gee thinks its the best cake ever but it just looks sooooooooo average and amateurish AND just so disappointed after my last 4 years efforts which I have been so happy with!

Sorry to whinge but just annoyed with myself and my efforts and stupid dp keeps saying "oh it looks fine don't worry about it" which just makes me angrier mad

Feel like "accidentally" knocking the cake board onto the floor and then going to Eve's pantry in the morning and getting one of their boring mud cakes!

I feel your cake pain....but gees is the opinion that counts, so don't you dare knock it on the floor! A cake her mum made will be much more special to her than a shop one. I look back on my party photos from childhood and see that my mums cake were pretty amateur too but I thought they were fantastic at the time, and I still love that she always made the, rather than bought them.

Cake ended up being fine - GAbi told everyone it was the best cake she had ever seen love2 and kept showing everyone....it tasted devine, was so lovely and moist (thanks to Peace for posting that recipe :))
Was so disappointed in my effort this year but yeah just my overly high expectations of myself as ended up being completely fine.

SIA, pity about your cake, but its a great recipe eh? I made one today for my mums birthday and she loved it, its so tasty!

When I did a cake decorating course and had to do a dolly varden cake mine did the same thing trying to get it out of the tin. The tutor told me that it usually happens if the cake hasn't had enough time to cool down. Do you think thats what might have happened to you?

Glad that Gee loved it though, thats all that matters right? laugh

sorry just saw this Chatterbox....ummm I think from memory I did leave the cake for quite a while to cool down but the cake seemed a bit sticky so maybe I didn't cook it long enough - was hard though as the shape of the tin had a smaller cake next to a bigger one so the smaller one started to over cook and so don' tthink the bigger one was properly cooked and that was the one that broke.

Gee was so sweet though and told me the cake I made (the yummy choc cake that I just iced and drew an icing flower on the top of with some cake decorations of flowers) was the best cake she had ever seen love2 It certainly was the best cake I have ever made taste wise - far out soooooooooo good!!! Have made twice since and just so easy and no fail and yum drooling2 I want cake!!!

This is the cake I did for DD on the weekend for her 6th birthday. It is GF too as I had an allergy to cater for. I thought I was doing so well checking everything for GF and then had a minipanic as I was about to put the tinkerbell topper on as I hadn't checked that. Thankfully it too was GF.

The cut version.

I only have 1 child and I work full-time, so her birthday cakes are my annual effort to do something she will hopefully remember (in other words, trying to make up for the guilt I feel for working!). She has faith now that whatever she requests, I will be able to produce - nothing like a bit of pressure!!!

Hi ladies
TOTAL novice at this (ie baking a cake is a big deal to me!!) My mum is going to help me with DS 2nd birthday cake, we have bought a Mickey Mouse cake mould off Trade me - but just wondering if anyone else has done a Mickey Mouse one before? In my very sparse reading I understand that black icing is quite hard to do? Im just not sure what type of icing to use? Mum and I were talking about potentially fondant, but Mum thinks that 2 year olds arent that keen on hard icing as such and we should just stick with butter icing?
ANY advice/pics would be SO appreciated! Im a bit nervous about it all, esp as Im all hormonal and pregnant as well!!
rofl
TIA
smile
