As I said, I stained ours too dark, which causes more expansion, and probably more noise at night when the house cools and contracts. It was some years before I stopped noticing the summer sounds. I agree that it isn't really a creak, more of a crack

Xmas Tart - reminds me of when DD was little and I was trying to distract her at the doctors for her imms. There were pics on the wall and I was saying "what sound does the cow make?", "what sound does the horse make?" etc . . . .
